The collapse of civil and moral principals has indeed been depressing to watch in real time.

If you’re so inclined, David Brooks had a decent column touching on the subject today in a sort of cultural overview since he began at the Times. (Time to Say Goodbye, NYT, 1/30/26) The column also serves as his farewell to the paper.

The TLDR, in contemporary parlance, is “We have become a sadder, meaner and more pessimistic country.” His reasoning as to why is a bit deeper than some of the obvious. Worth a read.

I will definitely take a read. It has been saddening, exhausting, and depressing to watch us fall as a country. I use to go on social media to watch dumb funny reels to escape life. Now i open the apps and see people being murdered as if it is normal life. Or everyone fighting with each other and blaming everyone else.

Man, I hear you. I quit using a pretty big chunk of the internet because of all that. I’ve been trying to focus a bit more on the hyper local, personally: family, friends, community, hobbies, etc. It’s certainly increased my own personal quality of life. But it’s also quite difficult to remain impartial to the absolute rot of society happening in the country/world outside of my own comparatively pleasant community. The thing that’s really been weighing on me is raising my child and the values she’ll be exposed to outside of our home and community. There’s only so much one can do to shield their kids from the “real world.” And the real world has gone a bit chit, in my estimation.

Yes. And the police must announce their legal authority and the commands you need to comply with. It must be clear and understandable.

Yes, not only the rights are established to be objective ... but also the laws against "assaulting, vandilizing (sic), and obstructing".
Even those of us who are appalled by the gestapo-like tactics of ICE have to acknowledge that.

Consider in contrast to the protestors who were assaulting, vandalizing, and obstructing, there were many more who were just in the streets blowing whistles, yelling, and expressing opposition to the unprofessional tactics and to the seemingly cruel treatment of citizens. That treatment by ICE is certainly not respectful of those Constitutional rights, which are for the most part respected by law enforcement officers at all levels across this nation. That's why the good guy professional LEOs don't get filmed and featured on the nightly news.

When did we, as a society, become so full of hate? Over the last few months, I’ve lost a lot of respect for people I once believed were genuinely good-hearted. We may disagree on certain issues or agendas, but I always thought we shared basic decency until recently.
Now we live in a society that cheers for the death of someone simply because they hold different views — and that’s coming from all sides. We normalize racism, ignore our constitutional rights slowly slipping away, and replace compassion with outrage. There’s no room left for reasonable conversation. Everything turns into retaliation: “They did this, so I’ll respond out of spite.”
I don’t think most people are defending murderers or drug dealers being arrested and deported. You can disagree with how ICE handles enforcement while still supporting the removal of dangerous criminals. Both things can be true at the same time.
Should people come here illegally? No. But I also can’t imagine what it’s like to live in a place so desperate that you’d pack a backpack, grab your family, and flee to a foreign country where you don’t speak the language — knowing many people already hate you before they even meet you. That alone says something about how bad conditions must be. These are still human beings, and they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
As a nation, I think we all need to pause, take a breath, and start fixing things together instead of tearing each other apart. At the end of the day, most of us want the same basic things in life. We just disagree on how to get there.

This was a very thoughtful response. I think a lot of the hate/rage/frustration/fear stems from getting an all too real glimpse into what this country is becoming, or at least some parts of it slipping down when the pendulum swings too far one way.

We are fully in the grip of billionaires and the top 1% pulling the strings on our finances, healthcare choices, career options (or lack thereof) and our standing globally. Which, by the way, is a joke. We have pissed on the shoes of our allies and emboldened our enemies.

We are at a tipping point, and the lines are blurring regarding "red vs. blue", etc. If you zoom out to 30,000 feet, and objectively look at where we are in the US globally, domestically, financially and morally, it is not a good place to be.

I would consider myself a failure as a father to my son if he grew up to be like the orange guy in the white house or any of his cronies. Zero redeemable qualities, full of hate and retribution and looks out for himself only. That mentality is being applied to this entire country everyday and "we the people" are getting kicked in the nuts for it. If anyone thought they are safe because they voted for him, I have some beachfront property in North Dakota to sell you.

We need a major overhaul and we may see it come November, but I am not overly optimistic. My 90 year old father, a Korean war vet, a longtime former federal biologist who has seen a lot, told me "I have seen crooked, bad and plain stupid over and over, but trump takes the cake."

I fear we're well past being able to vote ourselves out of it. I'd expect near anyone in the future that gets in office will have better table manners and be less likely to act like a 5th grade bully in comparison with Don. But basically everyone in office is a puppet for the International banking conglomerate and largest corporations. I often wonder how we change our system so that isnt' the case but I'm stumped. They control it, why would they let us change it? Without very violent/messy revolt against the power structure I dont see it happening and I think we're likely past that being possible because we're barreling full speed into a complete surveillance state powered by AI.

Biggest issue should be stopping the global elite from their grasp on the world. It's magnitudes bigger than any of the distractions we're blasted with every day. They'll keep us fighting over the crumbs and looking up for help.
