All this reloading info is above my head, but it does seem like a nice and fun hobby to get into. An old ex-girlfriend of mine’s dad was big into it and would just give me an abundant supply of pistol ammo.

Getting into it from a technical level is pretty cool. The reason i do it is to tune loads to rifles for accuracy, and to load some loads that are not commercially available. Aside from this, i think it would he a very time comsuming and highly expensive way to try and save a few cents on ammunition. It was better 10 years ago. Now i cant load 270 winchester for what i can buy hornady american white tail for at the local gas station. Pistol ammunition is out of the question. In most cases i would pay as much for the unloaded bullet as the cost of the ammunition when bought in bulk. My approach to handloading is to pick a bullet i like in a caliber, work up a load that shoots one hole at 200 yards in a given rifle, make a 10 year hunting supply of that ammunition, put it in the cabinet, and then ever year or two after hunting season i go through my few pieces of empty brass and load them again. The downside is when you spend months working up a load for a speer bullet, and the ***** that run "the kinetic group" cut back a common bullet to simply doing annual production runs of that bullet, wont tell you when, and wont tell you which select handful of retailers they plan to ship them to. then you either stockpile a bullet that aint really any better than the rest, or have to redevelop a different load, and gradually switch to it understanding the ballistics are different.
These days, i pretty much only shoot bullets or ammunition that say Hornady. All of the companies in "the kinetic group" have lost my respect and endorsement.

Behold, my $565 Savage Model 14 in .308! First time Savage owner here. Looking forward to getting to the range with her. This rifle is used with only 4 rounds through it. Topped with my Z6 that cost me double the rifle cost, haha. That XCR .270 is still available too, if the seller goes down on price.

My dad had a savage in 223. Very accurate and functional. I've heard new savages can have a rougher action. I've read some people use some gun oil and run the action back and forth a bunch to help smooth it out.

This one is really not noticeably different from my old Remington 700 that I hunted with for years, as far as the smoothness of the bolt. I’ve heard several people say that about Savages, that their actions are not smooth and that they aren’t too aesthetically pleasing, but they are generally very accurate. As long as have a reliable rifle that goes bang when I squeeze the trigger and can offer me a reliable cycling for a follow-up shot in the field, I’m a happy guy.
Glad to hear you have a smooth one. Yes as long as it's accurate and reliable what more do we really need from a rifle.
