Nevada elk odds

There have been several draw odds questions for various states lately. I have a little time on my hands and worked the odds out for Nevada Muzzleloader hunt in unit 76, 77, 79 and 81. This is one of the units I have tried to draw.

this is what I can up with according to the NDOW stats looking at all 5 choices:
Points. Draw Odds
0 = .02%
1 = .02%
2 = .07%
3 = .16%
4 = .28%
5 = .44%
6 = .63%
7 = .87%
8 = 1.1%
9 = 1.4%
10 = 1.7%
11 = 2.1%
12 = 2.5%
13 = 3%
14 = 3.5%
15 = 4%
16 = 4.5%
17 = 5.1%
18 = 5.7%

Eye opening for me. Almost a decade of applying for a 1% chance.

Good luck to everybody in the draws. Looks like we all might need it.
Your best bet is Land owner tags. No more waiting for draw results year after year and you can usually hunt every year.

I dont like the way Nevada does things. Ive gone to game commission meetings in the past suggesting a better way that would be more ethical and fair and it always went on deaf ears. There was a group in Reno that was totally convinced that the way the draw system was set up was so they could favor individuals in drawing a tag, there evidence was very compelling. If im an Attorney General they could insure me that I would draw. In Nevada i could have 23 preferential points and not draw where someone with 0 Points would. When guys are willing to pay over $100,000 for a Governor's tag dont tell me the system isn’t riddled with corruption

Whatever you want to call the points is irrelevant. The system is screwed up. Nevada has a habit of doing things half assed backwards. Like their Bobcat sealing. There the only state that does it that way. Steel shot usage for water fowl?? Steel shot should be used for any bird hunting when your close to water but if your hunting upland birds you can scatter lead shot all over waterways. Thats Government half assed backward. No common sense. Elections are irrelevant regardless of who gets elected corruption is how the whole system functions

Thats the reality of whats going on I guess living in a fantasy world works for you, if thats the case I have some ocean front property for you in Kansas

I've been hunting here in NV since before they went to a bonus point system. Before then we would just go to the local bait shop and buy deer tags.
I will tell you the hunting was pretty crappy back them.

I'm sorry man, i think your takes in regard to this suck. How i gather it:

-Newer or younger hunters without points having 1/529th of the odds to draw a tag as a guy with 23 points is corruption. Those hosers should wait 15+ years (with point creep) before they sniff a chance at a tag.
-We should make overly complex laws for upland birds based upon how near water is. Eff all you guys who are happily hunting with lead because waterfowlers did something different.

The point squaring makes everyone's odd's "Bad"....Lower point holders are just more bad. Kinda like a fair divorce; both parties feel equally screwed.

There are still more opportunities for folks to hunt Elk in Nevada than there were 30 years ago. Sorry that it isn't a secret about how good it is anymore.

You can call coyotes there every year, or hunt Chukar, or chase mountain lions...

I was born in Nevada in 1953. But didn’t start hunting until i was 21. Not sure where you hunted but even when they first started the draw system where I hunted it was fabulous. You had your pick of what buck you wanted I hunted area 16 7 and 10 with a muzzle loader. You got picky really fast because I would glass over 20 plus bucks a day I hunted around Angel Lake and glasses some of the biggest bucks Id ever seen. You had to work hard and get off the beaten path. Table Mountain in are 16 was also incredible. Some days id see over 30 bucks and during the September muzzleloading hunt the Elk would be in rut and bulls would be bugling up and down those canyons. It was an incredible time. Thing was I almost never saw another hunter

I drew a lot of tags in Nevada both deer antelope and elk. Hunted almost every year. Now with the mass migration out of California Nevada has doubled in size not so easy anymore. I started trapping coyotes and bobcats. Still see a lot of nice bucks out where I trap Lot more fun and i get out all the time.

Draw odds everywhere are going to get worse. As fires burn vast areas of Nevadas sage brush winter range there will be fewer and fewer deer. The good news is that Antelope do good eating cheat grass so the Antelope herds will increase. I dont know about you but Id rather hunt antelope over deer or elk any day. In Nevada I’ve turned in two Elk tags because the guys who said “You can count on me to go hunting with you “ backed out both times at least when hunting Antelope there easy to get out plus you don't need a 416 Remington Magnum to hunt them my 6 Creedmoor is perfect

What are you trying to say. I like it. We need to make getting a hunting license more difficult. In order to get a hunting license everyone should have to demonstrate a high level of proficiency with your weapon of choice. You want to hunt chukar or ducks you better be able to shoot at least 50% in trap and skeet you cant practice and try again. You cant hit a 8” circle at 100, 200, and 300 with a scoped rifle no go. Way to many people in the field that shouldn’t be there.

We owe that to the game we hunt. Your wife, daughter, or son can’t qualify then Dad you need to train them up so they can

I thought you were insinuating that the possibility (however unlikely) that someone with 0 points could draw a tag over someone with 23 points was an indication of a corrupt or broken system. After reading again, im not sure you were saying that. If you were, i think its a dumb take. You cant have a preference point system (he with most points gets the tag) without completely shutting out young or new hunters with the huge disparity between supply and demand that exists for NV tags.

In regards to requiring non-toxic shot for upland game, i think most upland game hunters would tell you to shut up. Contradictions exist everywhere in life and laws/regs are seldom perfect.
