I’ve managed to grab a Nevada deer tag and I’m now in the middle of changing my plans to hunt south of Elko mid October.

I’ve started my research and have a general area picked out based on the biologist recommendations. I’ve also got myself a truck rented and booked myself into a hotel in Elko for the first night. Where I will pick up the tag.

As always, I really appreciate recommendations from people who know the area, would be great to hear about any restaurants, must see places to visit or any other general advice for that area.

I’m thinking about grabbing a mountain lion tag, not sure on the numbers in Nevada but thinking it might be worth to have the tag in my pocket just in case I see one.

Good luck. Smart move on the mountain lion tag. I saw one day two of my hunt a few years ago a couple units south of Elko and wished I had one so bad.

My friend filled his lion tag on my deer hunt. That was something we couldn't have guessed, but that's exactly why he always has a tag.

Good luck on your deer tag!

Sounds like a great trip congrats on the tag! South of Elko is some beautiful country, and mid-October should be a solid time to be there. The Ruby Mountains area is worth exploring if you’ve got time great scenery and good deer country. For food, try Machis Saloon & Grill or Luciano’s in Elko both solid. If you need gear or last-minute supplies, Sportsman’s Warehouse in town is handy.Grabbing a lion tag isn’t a bad idea they’re around, especially in the Rubies and the Independence range. Even if you don’t see one, it’s good insurance. Good luck on your hunt and enjoy that Nevada country — it’s special out there.
