As the saying goes ... "Freedom isn't free."

George Washington is credited with creating the Badge of Merit on August 7, 1782, with only a handful of soldiers so honored for "singularly meritorious action" during the American Revolutionary War. The designer of the original award remains uncertain.

Today the United States honors the almost 2 million American service men and women whose love of country led them to be wounded or killed.

We might spend a little time today in reflection honoring those individuals.

You may read up on the award's history here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_Heart

Both of my grandfathers received the Purple Heart for injuries received in WW2. One fought in North Africa / Italy and the other in Western Europe. Both suffered fairly significant injuries and were never the same mentally or physically after the war.
Though long gone now, these men are my heroes and I am very thankful for their service and sacrifice.
