Yea right. He did his first martial arts tourney today. Kind of lame since he was pretty much the only 7 year old his belt level and size. He was also the only kid in the 6-7 year old age group his size for the forms and the only kid 7 years old green belt and lower for point sparring. He could have went up against some 6 year olds a foot shorter but he would not have had any fun and crushed them they were so small. So I asked his Master if he could compete in the 8-9 year old intermediate class (blue belt and higher). They said sanction rules would not let him for record, but they would let him fight a 8-9 year old for exhibition match only, so they threw him in with this one kid for a match. My boy won't hardly harm a fly, and when he saw this black kid was wearing no chest pads he was kind of freaked out (all of the black kids did not wear them
) Anyway, he refused to kick him in the torso for the most part and you can hear me and his coach yelling for him to KICK!. He still did good considering fighting someone a belt above him in the next age class up and almost took it straight up. He had fun, and they gave him a gold medal anyway (he won by default since he had no class competition). I don't know why the black kids do not wear chest gear.
Last tourney another kid from his school had the same situation and the first point kicked the kid in the chest and he started crying. Like my kid would have done he refused to kick him anymore and they disqualified him. They make it mandatory to have a cup and mouth guard, but no chest gear?? WTF, these are just kids. Oh well, Garrett had fun and thinks the medals he won are great and at his age I guess I am happy as long as he is.
