MT opening day Elk hunt , the swing shift

My job I have to work till 1 AM, yesterday was the rifle opener in Montana

Got up about 730am packed the truck left the house around 10am
got in the Woods at around 1pm … Bull down 6pm

He came past me, bugling and screaming pushing about 10 cows at about 75 - 80 yds , now he’s pushing up daisy’s

I’ve only been hunting elk for 11 years. This is my sixth elk and my biggest , pretty amazing day.

Well, time to start thinking about deer hunting and guiding for my family , I still got four weeks off of rifle season …






Hung him in a tree overnight came back with friends and a game cart this morning


On to the next one Ol’ Son ……

I was thinking the same thing. Elk hunting Idaho really seems like the worst thing going

Yes sir , 2 bulls less than a year apart 349 days between harvests

Last year was a general tag this season was a drawn tag , won’t say the area because I got the suggestion from a friend, and outta respect for him I can’t share any info ….

Yeah, I cut my teeth hunting Roosevelt Bulls in the Oregon coast range in that thick nasty no visibility rainforest loggin country

A Little visibility has been a breath of fresh air

I got a tip from an archery buddy who said a heard moved into that area in the last 48 hours of archery season

I’ve never been in that section of public , and it had been eight days since he saw them there and I had no idea if anyone was in there opening morning because I was getting up there so late and so my approach to the whole thing was hunt like an archery hunt and assume the elk were there and I just hiked using the wind and looped into elk , had to play the waiting game and move around a little with the wind and wait like three hours before one of the bulls finally gave me a shot.

Ha ha ha it was , Oregon football was way in the rear view , I was sitting on the elk and and I keep getting texts and I look at my phone and my son’s just going on and on about how much the ducks suck and the offensive coordinator needs to get fired which he was today and I didn’t respond just put my phone back in my pocket cause I got elk within 150 to 300 yards of me

Had no time to care …. Ha ha
