Hey all,

Anyone have any experience with Mountain Tactical and their gear? Have a Tikka T3X Hunter 300 Win. Mag and looking to replace the magazine and (consequently) the bottom metal. Also going to throw on a Limbsaver recoil pad while I am at it.

Just curious if anyone has used their stuff and really likes it. Thanks in advance!

Pretty big fan. I put their knurled bolt handles on all of my Tikkas. Just installed their bottom metal (and using their magazines) on a .338-06 this spring. Fit and finish seems good but the magazines seem a little lightly built. For what it is worth, I'm sold enough that I plan on using the same bottom metal and MT mags in my next build.

Planning on keeping the OEM stock or switching that out as well?

Keeping the stock. I got the wood stock Tikka (I’m old fashioned I suppose) so hoping the fit is still good.

Jason runs quite a few product/how-to videos on his YouTube channel. He also answers e-mails pretty quickly if you want to reach out to make sure it is compatible.

Thanks for the info!
Here's what it looks like installed:

Pure Precision also makes a nice bottom metal with a more Tikka-traditional rounded trigger guard if that floats your boat.

Yeah that would be nice. Hopefully their wouldnt be any issued with the fitment with the mags. Sweet rifle build by the way

I have used their stuff for years. No issues other than I did not care for the Gen 1 metal magazines. Other than those, everything else has been awesome.
Dumb question, but are the new gen mags no longer metal?

I had the bottom metal and it was great, fit right out of the box. Gave me more confidence taking it afield than the factory plastic one, but ymmv

I have three of their mags (2, 3 round mags and 1, 5 round mag) and the bottom metal on my T3x and I love them.
Not one problem. The bottom metal fit right in, right out of the box, no problem.
I have the bombproof recoil lug, but have not installed it yet.
I would recommend them.IMG_3644.jpeg

I have their bottom metal, 2 magazines, and at least one trigger spring.

The magazines were a wsm long action and a longer coal 223 mag. They are both a prior gen and neither fed worth a shit.

There has been functional issues with bottom metal holding on to mags as well. They may have revised that.

They supplied recoil lugs for rokstoks for a while and some of those were found out of spec and caused issues.

I’m sure they make some stuff that works but I’ve seen enough to not want any of their stuff.

Dang hard to beat factory tikka mags if they work for your given coal. I understand that’s not always the case.

Got the trigger guard. Love it.

Update: had a little trouble with my .338-06 holding onto the Mountain Tactical 5-round magazine during a long range session yesterday. I've had this problem with other mags, in other bottom metal, with this rifle before. I'm thinking the recoil in a lightweight rifle doing low-end .338WinMag speeds is just a lot for parts to handle. I'm also dealing with an annoying habit of my 1/2x28 to 5/8-24 thread adaptor walking off under repeated recoil.

Going to work on tweaking the mag just a bit to see if I can get a better lockup. Hells Canyon and Unknown Munitions also make some interesting looking aluminum mags for the Tikka. Anyone fooled around with one of those?

@Sheltowee Google "Mountain tactical bottom metal problems" and you should see a 3 page thread over at rokslide show up in relation to MT bottom metal dropping mags. There are fixes and trouble shooting info too.

I have 2 sets of high desert bottom metal on tikkas in rokstoks. They require all the shims that come with them in the rokstoks to work right but other than that they have been good. I've been told this need for the shims is typical with stockys manufactured stocks but not with others.

If i needed another tikka bottom metal, i'd look at lumley.

As far as mags go, i've used the 1st gen Hells Canyon WSM/SAUM mags on my custom tikka 7 SAUM and they feed fine with the heavies loaded to around 3.1" but not worth a crap with 145 CEB lazers loaded to 3.0" COAL. They have a gen 2 now i think? I also have some Waters rifleman mags (from Australia) for my tikka 223. The Waters mags are top notch but I think they only typically come in 6 and 10 round versions so not always the best for hunting rifles and they are quite expensive. If you can live with the weight/protrusion of a 6 rd model waters i think they'd be tough to beat.

I think the UM bottom metal/mags only work with each other. They are expensive and Long Action specific IIRC so I have little interest in them. I don't even own a true long action chambering anymore.

I'll repeat though - if the factory tikka mags (other than the 223 models) work with a given COAL, they are very hard to beat usually.

Really the only reason i go away from factory bottom plastic on tikkas is it "squishy" when torquing an action to a stock and doesnt hold up to as much torque as i'd like on action screws especially in a stock with more solid bedding.

Going to aftermarket in many cases is less reliable and may need tweaking when it comes to basic magazine lockup and feeding function.
