Most plates aren't numbers anymore. Not disputing what you are saying, but I'll drive 45 minutes here for shitty mule deer hunting before 8 hours. mtmuley
7 6 5 4 and since western Montana is a vertical line at Hysham 3 plates. And BHA you would get beat up in the streets if you were a local with BHA plates.

I throw 7 4 5 and BHA right into the mix. Point being very seldom do you see local plates.

Hunter days are a worthless metric - each "sign in" to a bma is a "hunter day" and is accounted for accordingly. Ive not heard a straight answer when ive asked if that could lead to double days. Maybe ive had 4 days in one? Only someone duped or someone deceving intentionally would use these as a great source of data.
Some real facts - with the price of tags being nearly free and easy to buy "just in case", requiring one to apply for a LE unit (so r hunters not interested in hunting gen must have it), and a "hunting day" having a complely undefined and variable meaning relative to boots on the ground.
Looks like 1/3rd of the R deer tags sold dont even hunt it. Remember that next time moga, their lobbyist, or anyone else rams tag sales down your throat for wanting proper prioritization of your states resources.
Non residents arent the only problem. But theyre the largest one thats easily addressable, as long as its a natural resource first conversation and not a busines$ resource first one.

Most people I know get an elk tag every year but if they don’t draw a permit they aren’t heading west to hunt general

Yep that’s a lot of it. Also a lot of people can buy a lot of beef for $600 in fuel to chase elk and maybe get lucky out west.

@bigsky2 why was hunter days and tag sales the big selling point from the mule deer group therapy session a while back? By the way the ealier number (active hunters) - doesnt include nr upland, turkey, and bear that have also exploded and see similar inactive rates amongst r hunters.
Seems like "active hunters" paints a lot different reality than hunter days and tag sales. Must have got faciliated away.
Thank goodness the comission cared - i think some credibility for me might exist if orphaned tags were mentioned, over the cap sales, exploding b nr tags - but i recall the only legislative priority was the continued whining about muzzleloader season.
I guess thats my Brain Living Discerning Shit - referenced earlier - rather than have moga, a lobbyist, or a legislator doing my thinking for me and turning it off.

Curious - was it sheer incompetence to label tag sales as "hunters" or was that more deliberate language by the people "facilitating"? Seems a lot like "uhh yeah fwp says no le" to me.
Given montanas cheap price, force to buy a gen tag to get a le, its kind of basic shapes to see that a tag sale doesnt reflect a "hunter" the same across nr and r.
Easy to see why it was closed to anyone public and some guy got paid to fly across america for it. Was never about the deer.

I think it is possible that there are more locals trying to fill there elk tag on a spike or cow than those actively trying for a mule deer buck. Of course all of them have a buck tag and if they see a nice one it is going down.
I think I see more six plates than 29 or 14. Plenty of 4, 7 and 5 plates too. Not 1 plates though. Could be that no one from Butte wants to advertise there home address.
