Montana Grouse Opens Sept 1

Who's headed out? Going to go chase some sage grouse this weekend in a little spot we discovered last season while hunting elk. Should be a fun weekend with birds & trout. Forecast looks nice with highs in the 60s.

Too many hours on the books so taking the day off! Supposed to be hot up here, so probably a short day for us. The big dog gets warm pretty fast in this early season stuff. Maybe some sharpies in the morning, doves in the evening...

I'll be chasing grouse in SW Montana. Got into a bunch last year, but wasn't able to drop one. They flush so far out. This year I'm taking my dad's dog and hoepfuly he will get us on something.

Gonna take Chase and the new pup Vixie along with the 2 boys and wife to the dove spot after work thursday evening. Should be a good time. Probably slay some blues this weekend while elk hunting.

I took my 1 yr old chessie, Kate, this morning to see if we could scare up a few blues. No birds were found and the heat was still too much for my comfort, even in shorts and a t-shirt. Still, it was good to get out and stretch the legs some. After I bandage up my feet we will get back at it tomorrow morning in a different place. Kate did a great job working in gun range and checking cover, like she was a seasoned pro! The CZ Upland Ultralight carried pretty well. Hoping our luck improves!

Took the opener off and tried to find some birds. Decided to quit when the thermometer in the pickup read 95. Was nice to let the dog run and take the shotgun for a walk though.

Took the dogs out opening morning for a quick walk before it got too hot. It was still hot. It was some pretty easy shooting getting a triple on grouse and guns. Fun way to start the season.

anyway my old dog and my 8mo old pup have pointed and retreived 6 limits of sharpies last couple days, this morning was a grat morning, moisture light wind 60 degrees,, grouse everywhere,,,

Took the new pup out for the first time on Thursday but managed to get skunked for the first time in years. Been waiting my whole life for a bird dog and can't find a bird when I finally get one. Talk about anticlimactic. Thought about shooting a squirrel just to give her something to retrieve. Made a quick trip to a buddy's place this evening and got her on a few birds. Probably would have had a few more had my fat arse not been digging through my pockets for more sunflower seeds when she jumped the second covey.
