Montana draw 2026

I kinda figured they’d have to do them this week. Don’t they state that they sell surplus tags on June 15 or some such?

Also, I misspoke and forgot they don’t draw antelope until August after they do field counts.
Sign up for surplus starts June 15 . OTC b tags for deer and elk go on sale June 15 also .

Do I know anyone that has gone unsuccessful in drawing a NR combo tag , and then has purchased a b tag to hunt Montana anyways ? Yes . Also know plenty of folks that don’t apply for combo tags at all but shoot cow elk on OTC tags every year
Interesting. Theres quite a contingent of people around that somehow think that no one does that and the only people buying b tags are hunting a combo tag.

Definitely not the case. I have several friends (n=4) that have come out and purchased an OTC elk B tags for the late season cow elk hunts. It's possibly the best value for NR IMO if you have the right connections.

Yeah - folks should remember this feedback when the NR 61k license sales topic comes around. I know plenty of NR who do it too.

Is there actually OTC B-tags? I was under the assumption that most were draw (some/most of them go to leftovers) with a minority being purchased first-come first-serve under quotas?

Yup. Not really wanting to advertise where.

Seems very relevant when people are talking NR hunters, numbers, pressure and tag sales and assume that no ones hunting B tags.

I just read the regs, it ain't hard to figure out where they are.

Most of them are pretty restricted, a couple are not. It would be interesting to see the breakdown of who is buying them vs picking up leftover tags for other districts.

Also, I don't know who assumes that NR aren't hunting B-tags. If you look at the data it's close to 50% of the total NR tags are B-tags. It's just there isn't a good mechanism to keep them from buying those tags and the department is incentivized to allow NR to buy a lot of them.

I think we are restricted to 2 b tags
