A friend of mine posted this on Facebook, as she describes her teenage Son's first Elk hunt. He was hunting with his Dad and Uncle, around Lake City, Colorado.

Ethan's first Elk Hunt was a memorable one. At the end of the second day, they were on a herd of elk. Once Ethan picked out his cow, he dropped her where she stood at 324 yards. Ethan reloaded and found her in his scope a second time only to find a mountain lion pouncing on his cow. Since the first shot was sufficient, the second shot was only needed to scare off the Lion. With the sun now gone, Ethan ended up on lion duty the next 2 hours as Wade and John made quick work of quartering up the elk and getting the heck out of there.
