measuring rimfire ammo

I was looking at the rimfire gauge sold by Neil Jones custom products while buying some other items. Why not measure the overall length of the cartridge as opposed to using this tool? Also, as someone who has no knowledge of reloading, is rim thickness something you'd measure in centerfire ammo? Thank you, gentlemen, for your insight.
