Matt Rinella knocking it outta the park

Interesting. I've listened to several of his podcast episodes and don't recall that. I wouldn't agree with that take. I've heard him say several times that hunt quietly isn't opposed to new hunters in principle, as long as they're in it for hide, horns and personal satisfaction.

I copied it about the time Rogan said he was too stupid to just drive down the road when he showed up late to a trailhead and there were people already there.
Might have been on his ig or an interview.

I still haven't met someone who hunts for social media gratification. Who do you know that hunts for the social media attention? If it's social media attention they want, they can take off most of their clothes and get way more attention than they do with a dead deer or elk. Only about 4.8% of the US population hunts. Who would seek attention amongst less than 5% of the population?

I HAVE seen people who continuously brag about things like "number 92" or something trying to brag about how many elk or deer they've killed.
I am 100% certain I can get more likes with hunting content, I have seen myself with few clothes and there in not much to like.

If you're one of the new MeatEater era hunter I would say you're hunting has gotten better for YOU, but not those who hunted before you. You're now one more hunter in the pot competing for tags and access.

To answer your last question; I would say 3/4 of new hunters I interact with will bring up ME within our first conversation. There are a ton of guys at work who started a "hunting group" of buddies because they got bored during COVID and binge watched ME. All these new hunters were influenced by ME and other hunting media and are now reducing overall draw odds and access. Anyone who's been hunting out West long enough can see the downward trend when it comes to hunting opportunities. While I've become a better hunter over time, my opportunities have significantly been reduced.

I 100% blame hunting media for this.
I was there with topo maps and a compass. Cell phone was for fckall because no service. Any evidence to substantiate our stories was 35mm. Humility because it really was up to chance despite all best efforts. I miss those times.

There are people that hunt, even on this forum, that do it for social recognition and likes. We have all read the day to day hunts on this forum about how they ground it out (hammering) to the last weekend of season and tag an animal and they intentionally tease people along for multiple days or weeks to satisfy their ego. I wonder if any of them were shot opening morning at daybreak, and they had to create a better story? Or the guys that throw up multiple photos of their hunts to prove a point when the conservation switches direction and turns into a big dick contest.

Its human nature be happy about a successful hunt, a well trained hound or horse, kids successful taking of an wild game, beautiful country, etc. Its another situation when people buy their way to the top, by leasing up or buying land, continued uses of outfitters, or hunting 50-100 days a season to post stories and photos about killing Gods creatures.

Ive talked to Matt Reniella several times over the phone and we work in similar fields in eastern MT/WY, and I do somewhat disagree with his approach, but I think his main concern is the marketing of wildlife and influencers killing more animals than they can ever eat in one or two seasons. Im really happy when we fill one elk, deer and/or pronghorn tags in a season and have some of the best meat imaginable. Im afraid there will be a hard judgment for those that don't respect animals and/or hunt for the wrong reasons of social recognition or money.

Idk, I think you might be surprised. Remember, less than 5% of the US residents hunt. Try your feet. Those foot fetish people are more prevalent than hunters are according to the statistics!
