Massachusetts - Sunday Hunting Bill

Good luck with that one, hope you guys get it but highly unlikely.

I lived out there for 20 years and a bill of that nature would come up every few years.....and go nowhere as you can imagine.

I've hunted Ontario and some zones had the no Sunday hunting rule, it seems to be a popular rule out east. I've always thought it was dumb, I hope for you guys that it changes!

I think part of the problem is that hunters are notoriously shitty at participating in the conversation.

PETA folks, MT Bikers... whatever show up and make phone calls, hunters say "Good luck with that" or "it's socialist California it's inevitable".

Uphill battle, totally, but it takes about 30 seconds to make a phone call and IMHO phone calls to local reps actually go pretty far, much further than your State Rep.

Massachusetts may be bleeding heart liberal but it sure loves to hold on to its Puritan blue laws.

This bill or a similar one gets introduced nearly every year. One time it actually made it out of committee, AND passed the house only to be left to die on the sidelines in the Senate. I have expressed my support for these bills in the past and will do so again this year.

I cant recall the exact details but I believe a few years ago there was an attempt to allow just archery hunting on Sunday - a middle ground approach, I guess.

Unless I am missing something, the bill is a pretty short read.

We made a little headway on this issue in PA last year...we got 3 Sundays a year. Far from perfect, but it's a start. Wishing all you Mass-Holes the best of luck :)

Just did a bit more perusing and it looks like HD.915 (filed today) takes it a bit further, not just exempting deer season from the Sunday restriction which HD.767 does but gets rid of the section that prohibits Sunday hunting all together.

I lived in a state with no Sunday hunting. Why can you go golfing but not hunting? Just shorten the season if it's a "number of hunt days" kind of thing. If it's a religious thing then it should apply to golfing.

How are blue laws not a violation of the constitution?

I remember the days growing up in Ma when stores where closed on Sundays because of the restrictive blue laws. Those restrictions where finally changed but I see little chance of Sunday hunting in Ma, but you never know. I always show my support for it with my state rep and he’s on board with it.

We have struggled with this in Maryland for years. Finally we made some headway with archery deer hunting on selected Sunday's. We then picked up a couple of rifle deer hunting on Sundays on private land only. We have never made any headway on migratory bird hunting on Sundays. Heck, I should be glad I can fish on Sunday's ;)

I'd love to see this change too. It's a tough argument to make to a population that is mostly non-hunting and somewhat scared of hunters. People end up feeling safer being in the woods on sundays, to hike, bike, etc. They don't want to give that up.
My aunt and uncle lived in Barre for 30 years, in past she's made comments about being "scared of getting shot" during hunting season. I finally confronted her about it and asked if she had ever seen a hunter in the woods, to which she replied no.

So I agree it's all about people feeling safe... but I'm not sure if reality matches perception.

I totally agree. I tell everyone they should just buy a blaze orange vest and hat and recreate the way they want, with confidence.
