I’ve mentioned Pepper on HT a few times. She’s a Covid orphan puppy that was getting sent to the pound when I adopted her to be a bird dog for my sons. She’s always been a good dog with the quirky behavior of a shorthair. She’s not as fast as my setters but has areas she out performs them on some bird species especially ducks. Pepper retrieves over 100 ducks a season.IMG_1829.jpegIMG_0910.jpeg

My son goes out glassing on Monday and looses track of Pepper. No collar on the dog. Pepper hardly gets more than 150 yards from people. He freaks out a bit and starts grid searching thinking she’s lost. Nothing. He calls me freaking out. He concerned about coyotes, wolves, lions, cliffs, etc. Pepper knows the country. I suggest leaving a blanket and water. He spends until dark with no Pepper.

He goes up with my setters to search for her Day 2. No Pepper but the setters were finding a bunch of grouse. Setter bird circus. “I can’t get anything done because the setters are always finding birds.” I suggest Pepper might be miles away and to start slow creeping dirt roads in the area. No houses with 10 miles of the spot. Wife starts an internet search and puts out a missing dog notice.IMG_5815.jpeg
Wednesday Day 3 is the same. Clay’s back at the separation point with no luck. He did say the food was gone and water half gone. He spends half the days searching.

I get up as he leaves at 5am for an update. Day 4. He’s going to check the separation point. He thinks she’s dead. Wife and I continue to say positive thoughts to him. We all have heard stories of long time missing dogs.

I’m sitting at my desk this morning and get the call - she’s waiting for him at the blanket! Great news! No one knows where she went the last four days but did come back for Clay. Both are very happy to see each other. I told Clay to buy her a snack on the way home.IMG_0085.jpeg

It might be too late, but leave a coat/blanket with your scent on it and some food/water where you last seen him. Before GPS days and hunting with hounds we would spend a lot of time finding lost dogs and they would 90% of time be at the spot with food/water/blanket the next morning. Maybe contact the local sheriff dept too. Hope you find Pepper.

We did leave a blanket and water. Pepper was on the blanket this morning on Day 4.

Glad you found the dog.

That jacket or the blanket trick works well. I have used it several times when I had beagles.

Glad you found her. Coon/bobcat hunting in the 80s we would turn our dogs loose on Friday night and find them Sunday morning.

I see pics online by locals finding bear/cat hounds walking roads with e collars. I tell them to leave the dogs alone and the owner will find them.

I've had a few shit shows with my current golden retriever. Running deer and getting lost, hit by my neighbors SxS and taking off, etc. He doesn't go outside without the garmin.

I had a Husky. Man was he bad with taking off. Spent every night at home but in the day light.... Years after he died I ran into a guy at work that lived about a mile away. Woods and fields only in between. We started talking and it turned out he thought my dog was abandoned and would feed it every day. it would hang out in his yard with his dogs then be gone by dark and show up the next morning. Went on for almost a year. lol. Smart bugger would come home and get fed again.

Lost dog from a hunting trip is one of the worst feelings.

Lost one of my dogs during a duck hunting trip. Was told he was waiting at my truck for a while before we got back to it but he was gone when we got there. This was a weekend trip to an area and we had to be back home Sunday afternoon. We searched as much as we could, left his kennel and bed overnight and nothing. I figured he was gone. I put up a sign at the local bar and had that very bad sinking feeling that I wouldn't see him again. We get 45 minutes down the road and I got a call just as we reached cell service. Somebody had him at the bar in the back of their truck. They found him almost 15 miles away, he had only been gone for one night, about 24 hours and I am sure he didn't run that 15 miles in a straight line.

Several years ago I was hunting Sage Hens with my lab. When we got back to the truck is kennel door was shut and an English Pointer was inside. I assume someone drove by and saw the dog near my truck with a kennel in the back and assumed it was mine. Eventually found the owner. He had been looking for 2 days. He was a falconer. He used the pointer to find the birds then turned the falcon loose to go get 'em. Still not convinced the owner of the EP didn't put that crazy ass dog in the kennel in hopes he could give it away. Wound tight was an understatement.

That’s an awesome ending. My best friend lost his GSP in the middle of nowhere and even rented a super cub with no luck. Glad this one turned out better.

Glad your son found Pepper. Damn dogs are something.

Kind of a similar funny story. When I was a kid we had an old black lab. My ma would let her out on the deck when she came home for lunch and she'd be there when my brother and I would walk home from school. One day ma picked us up and brought us home. When we pulled up there was a squad car in front of the house and the dog was in the front yard. After a short conversation he revealed that almost every day (presumably as soon as ma went back to work) she would wander up to the courthouse (about 3 blocks) and sit under the trees in the shade. The sheriff deputies would go out and pet her and bring her treats and when she'd get up to walk back home one of the deputies would follow her to make sure she got home fine. He said it'd been going on for the last couple years, almost every day.

The unknown fate of a lost dog that's never found is something that never goes away.

Nearly 50 years ago when I was about 8 years old we had two dogs on chains in the back yard (mine all live indoors now). One was a golden retriever mix, the other a beagle. Us kids played with them constantly.

One morning we went out to feed them and the golden mix was gone. The beagles chain had been disconnected from the dog house and attached to the end of the missing dogs chain. There was never a clue what happened & never saw the dog again. That has always stuck with me, and I try not to think what someone did to him.

Glad your was waiting for you👍🙂

Was sitting at my desk in my home office yesterday on a video call and felt a dog-shaped object scoot under the desk and curl up by my feet. Our old Britt used to do that all the time before he passed but our new one only does that rarely. It was starting to storm so I figured she just wanted to be cozy. Thirty minutes later, call ends. Look under the desk to pet her.

Neighbors' dog (who we watch sometimes) had let herself into our house and marched straight upstairs to nap under my desk.

Nothing worse than having a missing dog. I am glad it worked out. After the last time mine went walk-a-bout, I picked up a Fi collar. It is limited to cell coverage, but sure makes me feel better when coverage isn't an issue.

My son owns a garmin. He didn’t think he needed it with Pepper that day.
