Hey Guys:

Our local sporting goods store is closing. The slow economy has taken it's toll. These really nice people bought this store and made it into someting really special. Pistols, rifles, shotguns, all types of archery including Mathews and Hoyt, fishing, trapping and license sales. They had a screen that you could shoot your arrows at along with another indoor range.

They are so friendly and the staff is incredible. It will be sad to see this store close. Before them I would drive to Cabelas which is 35 minutes away. Since they opened I have only been to Cabelas on one occasion in the past three years.

good luck to all

A shame. Community sporting good stores offer so much more than just product and service. Same thing is happening to a lot of fly shops. There's no better value for your dollar than to buy locally at these shops, even when the price is a little bit higher.

Cabelas has turned into the new Walmart for the small mom and pop sporting goods stores. The only difference is with Walmart at least you can usually find cheap prices.I also prefer the small shops, and spend as much as I can at them to help keep them going

"Dick's Sporting Goods" just opened up in my town, just a few miles from my house.
I was excited, we don't have a Sportsmans, Cabela's or Bass Pro.

Frankly, it's a disappointment.

Lot's of cheap Chinese junk, and high prices. Kind of like an overgrown Big 5.
Huge gun counter, full of package deals with injection molded tupperware stocks and $50 dollar scopes.
You can find all the same fishing equipment down the block at Walmart for 40% less.

I think I'm going to go buy something from the local guy, just for good measure.

Its a shame when a good store goes belly up. In the Portland area we lost "Larry's Sports Center" when the owner invested heavily in baseball gear and then it rained most of baseball season. We lost "G I Joe's" when the new management became the new mismanagement. "Sportsman's Warehouse" came and went though it was a great place to shop. Bi-Mart has always been a good place to find a limited amount of basic stuff. "Dick's" came and everyone was excited, but it has become just a flash in the pan as far as fishing and hunting stuff, prices, customer service. Out of a little store in N. Portland has come a local giant, "Fisherman's Marine", with three large outlets now open in the Portland area. You can't even get hired by the company unless you are experienced in the outdoors. There is always someone in the store that can answer any question, better prices than Dicks, Bi-Mart, Cabela's, and its a privilege to work there. Drop into the Tigard store when you are in the Portland area and say hi. Fishing is going to be red hot on the Columbia for the next two months (steelhead, chinooks).

I always buy local. I even bought my binoculars from a small eye glass shop that also specializes in optics. They matched the best price I could find including tax. You can't beat that with a stick. To see good businesses go is a huge dissappointment. Dicks blows!
