Looking to pick up a scope for a Seekins PH2 in 7mm Rem Mag before the season this year and was debating on which scope to pick up. I already have a VX-3 3.5-10x40 on my Rem 700 in .308 and it does a good job, I don't think I've looked through any leupold without not liking it but I was looking into the firedot scopes that they have. Does anyone have experience with the VX-3 4.5-14x50, 3.5-10x50 or 3.5-10x40? I don't like a lot of magnification but I will shoot over 500 yards periodically with steel targets. I also have looked into the VX-5 3-15x44 but I feel like I wouldn't use the higher magnification very often as I don't shoot out to 1,000 so the extra price for me isn't really choice. Any input is appreciated.

I think the Leupold 180627 3.5-10 x 40 would be your best choice. The glass on these is supposed to be pretty good. I have the 180623 which is pretty nice. Also a couple VX5-HDs. For me reticle style isn't a big consideration, but I like the Wind-Plexes.

Moorfield Mike,
I have a few of the 3.5-10x40 and the 4.5-14x40, and have a friend that has the 3.5-10x50. I do like the 30mm tubes better than a 1" tube. These are pretty good scopes, and are worth the money. To me the 50mm model does not seem to do anything more than the 40mm model except add bulk. I have the Firedot feature on a VX6 and have not found a purpose for it yet other than dark colored game standing in heavy shadows (ex. cape buffalo in the jess or black bear in the laurels). It might be handy for some fellows, but I do not buy the Firedot feature anymore. I really like my VX5 3-15 scopes too.

If you haven't already, you might read through this thread. I now have one each of the two Firedot scopes. I like them both. Best scopes I've ever owned. Good luck with your decision process!

The candidates are:

VX-3HD 3.5-10x40 CDS-ZL FireDot Twilight Hunter 30MM 180627
VX-3HD 4.5-14x40 CDS-ZL Wind-Plex 30MM 180623
VX-5HD 3-15X44 CDS-ZL2 FireDot Duplex 172368

I have 7 Leupolds with the Firedot now: VX-3HD 3.5-10x 50, 2 VX-Freedom 3-9x 50, 2 VX-R - 3-9x 50, and 4-12x 50, 2 VX-5HD 3-15x 44, and 3-15x 56. Also a few other Leupold's without the Firedot. Love the Firedots! Have also had Zeiss, Swarovski, and Leica, and they all had great glass. Also Nikon, Bushnell, Burris , Vortex, Weaver, and others. But down to all Leupold's now...all that I need.

Get a hold of @schmalts and tell him you want a VX5 3-14 x44 with firedot. I have one and it the best optics I have ever looked through. I have 3 of the VX3 and they are great and are reliable but the VX5 is on a different level.
These are so nice. Just got one from Schmalts earlier this month for my daughters first set up. My wife and I both have the same. Great scope.

I vote for the wind plex I have a couple high dollar Leupolds without it and when I go out and its super windy it reminds me that no matter what I am kentucky windage at best without one.

I have a VX5 HD 3.5-14 with the firedot and love it. Extra magnification is always necessary but great to have when you need it.
