Left handed rifle help

Aren’t the biggest coefficient differences mostly at the longer ranges? Like over 400 yards?

Yes, it has a bigger effect at longer ranges. A good comparison might be the Hornady Precsion Hunter line. The 6.5 PRC has a 143 gr bullet (2960 fps) and the 270 has a 145 gr bullet (2970 fps). Even at 500 yards, the factory specs show that the 270 only drops 1.4” more than the 6.5 PRC. But, at 500 yards, the 6.5 is going about 90 fps faster than the 270 and, when velocity is getting lower, that extra speed can have a significant effect on performance.

I have a 270 that I have shot a couple of animals with, and it did just fine. I also watched my daughter drop two elk in their tracks with factory Hornady 147 gr ELDMs out of a borrowed 6.5 PRC. So, I think either cartridge would be just fine but I would prefer the 6.5 PRC for myself. Despite my daughter’s success with the PRC, I ended up getting her a 6.5 Creedmoor for less recoil.

Tikka would be my vote.

I have a Browning A-Bolt in 270 that is a sub 3/4 MOA rifle all day long! I can't speak for the X-Bolt specifically, but I'd expect similar results.

I'm not sure why we're still using handed rifles; especially when the majority of people are backwards.

I'd talk him out of .270 and into a Beretta BRX-1. Cartridge isn't all that important as long as it's affordable by the case. Later he'll appreciate being able to swap the bolt around for others to use.

My vote is for Tikka. They are very left-handed friendly. Lots of options. Savage also has a few left-handed options.

There are plenty of good options out there for lefties today, not like it was 45 years ago when I was first in the market for a left hand bolt gun! Few options back then.

Tikka is the easy button, well made, accurate, lots of choices and affordable.

Make sure he is left eye dominant. My oldest is left handed but right eye dominant. So thankfully he prefers (rightfully so) right handed guns which make my life simpler.

As far as brand, I love my savage slug gun and I know others that love their savage rifles. Depending on age and recoil sensitivity, the 7mm-08 is a great gun that is quite available on ammo with less recoil. If wanting power I would go with the 6.5 PRC but ammo will be pricier and a little more limited by comparison.
