Maybe this is the wrong place for this thread, but is there a particular knife sharpener you'd prefer in the field? I'm just curious since I have to buy one for an up and coming hog hunt. Thanks for your input. I'm sure Delw, or Oscar will put this in the proper area if I'm outa line here.

I just recently bought a Lansky sharpener for here at the house and at camp. For in the field I just carry a little hand held thing that has two rods in a V shape, they sell them at Wally World.

I use a broken ceramic stick. A good edge on a knife can be brought back quickly with a few swipes from the remaining half of a ceramic stick. If you lose it or break it, your out nothing.

i use the ceramic sticks with a commercially made holder. i try to keep my knife sharp enough that i dont need to sharpen it in the feild but that is assuming i will drag the whole animal back to a skinning rack

I keep a cutting kit. A long diamond sharpener and a regular steel to set the edge. Works in about a minute and is a no brainer to use. Be careful using the carbide "v" sharpeners on thinner blades as it can tear up the fine edge.

I sharpen my knives at home and carry however many I think I'll need. For me it also depends on what I expect to do with the animal--quarter-skin-cape etc.

I would think 3 skinners will get you through a hog without too much trouble, plus a pocket knife for GP's.

I've had a Lansky for years and love it--whenever my camp is vehicle based I bring it

I use a Lansky at home and carry two sharpened knives. I also carry one of those little hand held sharpeners. The kind you draw along the blade a couple of times.

I carry a small steel in the bottom of my pack. It puts a quick edge on and will pull more metal off your knife when you need to fix a booboo....
I hit my bullet last year and took the edge right off my knife...
I was very surprised with that, considering what my knife is made of. But I suppose the consistancy of the bullet changes when you heat them up then make them stop and expand quickly.... :)

It seems like elk hair really dulls the edge quickly. So I use one of those cheap yellow plastic sharpeners that you get at Wal-Mart to put an edge back on my knife quickly. They don't seem to last too long so I buy a new one each year. As I said they're cheap.

Another Lansky owner! I don't have a sharpener out in the field, I just keep an extra sharp knife in the back pack just in case.

I'm with KC on this, I love the Yellow shapener from Wally world :) I've yet to learn to sharpen any other way !!!
