Could anyone that is familiar with elk hunting around Kaycee PM me please? Have some questions(mostly weather and access related) that I'd like to get some info on before heading that way. Thanks!

The weather the last half of September (archery season) can be pretty nice, but could be warm or even hot at times or you can experience an early snow. In October the weather can range from hot with temps in the high 80's to a full blown blizzard with considerable snow, etc. If you are not prepared for these extremes your hunt could turn out to be miserable.

Going west from Kaycee you can take the Slip Road via Mayoworth to reach some accessible public lands. The Slip Road will take you west to the Bighorn Mountain Divide Road (Hazelton Road).

The Barnum Mountain Road is not open to the public. You can access some BLM lands on the north side of the Middle Fork Powder River via an access road through the Blue Creek Ranch. There is access to BLM/Wildlife Management Area lands via the road that takes you to the Outlaw Cave Campground (south side of the Middle Fork Powder River). However, even though the map shows roads going through to the Bighorn Mountain Divide Road you can not get through unless you trespass on private lands and the gate may be locked. Don't try to do this.

To legally access lands on the Bighorn Mountain Divide from Kaycee you would have to take the Slip Road or go south of Kaycee on the Interstate to the TTT Road exit and then take several different roads that will eventually get you to the Bighorn Mountain Divide Road that would be straight west of Kaycee. You will need a set of BLM maps to navigate the south route or you will end up in a ranchers yard or lost or both.

What about mid November? The weather history looks like 10-30 f but how much snow should one expect?

November weather can be just as variable, and probably more variable, as October. By mid-November some or most of the higher elevation roads could be impassable due to snow or they could all be wide open and dry.

Years ago I hunted white-tailed deer west of Kaycee in mid November and the weather was absolutely beautiful that day. It was sunny and the temperature was around 60F.

Bottom line is every year, hell every day is different. Just gotta prepare for it.
