Just a doe and some bad shooting

I hit some private land I have been able to hunt the last couple of years. Saw lots of muley does on the walk in, but I wanted to find a couple whitey does first as they are not as plentiful on the property.

Finally found a few whities, but they decided to swim the Missouri River instead of come within range. River was moving pretty good as they were swept a couple hundred yards downstream before getting to the other side.

To hell with it, time to shoot a muley. I watched this one for about 10 minutes and decided to drop her when she stepped onto the two-track (don't want to have to drag too far:D ).

You can see the doe on the burm toward the middle of the shot. The road is 200 yards.

Eventually she turned away from the road and headed away. I gave a yell and decided to shoot her high in the neck. Woops, my shooting skills shined through and I missed.|oo She ran to the neighbors prop and was obviously untouched.

Well, screwed that up. I hit the road and checked out some public land. Found a decent buck and figured there must be some girls around somewhere. Finally found a couple and took the shot at 360 yards. Smack, but the deer took off. Great belly shot Miller.:BLEEP: She went about 50 yards and laid down. I used topography to get in close and dropped her in her bed. Pretty disappointed with how this hunt went down, but the deer is dead and will be in the freezer by tomorrow. I also have a date with the rifle range tomorrow and resolve any gun problems. Most likely it was the jack-ass pulling the trigger, but we shall see.

Axl joined in, but didn't like his necklace. Too many hunters in the area and I didn't want some yea-hoo unloading on a yellow labrador coyote.;)

More than likely it's the loose wing nut behind the trigger, but it's always good to check your gun. Been there done that. Congrats on the meat!

...switch off the ignition next time.:D

Or in Millers case with his Toyota... put the brake on the hampster wheel!

Nice going MT. When are you going to hunt in South Dakota?

Nice miller! Axle doesn't look to impressed with his bib...looks like he's getting ready to poney up to the dinner table!

Actually, the pick-up was about 1/2 from the deer I shot at and the one I killed. I can't imagine enjoying the hunt as much watching the sun rise over the upper Missouri River from the inside of a pick-up. Nice to just be sitting out there watching some bucks chase does, honkers coming off the River and bald eagles in the leafless cottonwoods enjoying the same show. That being said, this was a meat hunt and I was not going to shoot something that I had to sled more that a couple hundred yards to a vehicle.:D

Bambi - I drew a tag for the Black Hills. Haven't hunted there in 10 years or so. This is not big deer country, but it the quality has improved since they went to a drawing system and no more OTC for R and NR's. I have some friends letting me stay in a cabin in the Hills, so I won't have to drive to Sturgis every night and will be able to drink beer a little earlier in the evening while sitting in the hottub.:D

Also will be hunting a prairie unit near Sturgis. They usually find a pretty good buck opening weekend (tomorrow I think), but I should be able to find a decent leftover when I get there. Two weeks off, so no hurry and looking forward to seeing some women off the Hi-Line.;)

So you have 2 tags for SD or is it just good for one buck, but can hunt the LE unit? Sounds like a fun time. I'd like to hunt the Black Hills one year. Awesome country out there.

Good luck on your trip!

Three tags for South Dakota. One for the Hills (buck only) and two for the West River Prairie (any whitey and any antlerless whitey).
