Wasn't sure which title fits, probably both

Shared this with Randy privately as well as a couple others and it was suggested I share it with the forum if I was comfortable doing so.

I am past 80 and there are times my mind does not work as fast as it once did, plus I am waaaaay out of the loop in today's technology .

In past years my husband and I decided we wanted to travel some of the major waterways and did ( Mississippi, Yukon, Mackenzie, Danube, Yangtze, nile ) and the Amazon.

Some were short trips and some long trips. The Amazon was a long trip and it was very interesting.

When I was asked to join the forum, one of the first things I noticed was the "Amazon" thread. I quickly went to it, fully expecting to see or hear or read in one way or the other what I experienced from the trip we took, when we went up the Amazon--"River"

You can imagine my surprise and I laughed out loud at myself.

You are 80 years young, not old! And a wonderful person I should add. We enjoy you here and we need more people such as yourself to keep us in line and real.

David

I have a few decades on the odometer and the time arrived for my first prostate exam as scheduled my annual check-up at the doctor's office. I was thrilled to learn from the nurse that the prostate exam would be done digitally. Digital watches were popular at the time so was positive digital referred to some new technology for prostate exams. I had heard about prostate exams from some of the even older guys so was relieved a recent advancement had apparently been adopted. Probably an ultrasound or other non-invasive procedure.

Nope. Digital was just a fancy name for the same old method that had been used for decades. No new technology was involved. "Digit" in digital referred to the same old method. Glad I got the procedure done as early detection is always an advantage for taking on any illness or disease. I sure would have liked an ultrasound, though.

LOL believe it or not this made me smile as it reminded me of the "fun" discussions my husband and I had--"which is worse a prostate exam or a pap smear---thanks for the post

David, Brent, your to kind thank you

Has anyone else taken river trips ? the steam boat trips UP the Mississippi from N.O., is fun. Canoe, down the Yukon or Mackenzie in the summer --beautiful scenery--and then there is the Amazon--which for you fellows who are tech smart--is also a river LOL

I do, but different than what you are thinking of. I have paddled many in an open canoe - my favorite means of conveyance. I've not been on the biggest rivers that you mention, but the Rio Grande, San Juan, Colorado, Missouri (the Breaks), Green, and some others. And perhaps my favorite of all, the Boundary Waters/ Quetico, which is more of a river than a collection of lakes. They are all chained together in a complex web of flowages that makes that part of the world so much more interesting that most. When I was a child, I promised myself that I would paddle from Minnesota to Hudson's Bay, but never made it. Maybe yet, someday. Maybe.

Of the rivers you mention, the Mackenzie would be the one I would want to do the most.

I am 56 yrs old and I have thought about a retirement trip of this type for almost 30 yrs. I would like to basically seel everything upon retirement and put the rest in a storage facility. Take the money and buy a affordable used houseboat. This would be a houseboat made to sleep 4-6 people, would have a couple scooters/mopeds for travel on land on the deck. would have a small pram tried on the back for fishing/day trips.

A couple could motor up and down the rivers of the USA, connected off the Mississippi,Ohio,Tennessee,Missouri when you wanna go sight see, you anchor it in a backwater take the scooters for a ride, pay to have the boat hauled to the Great Lakes , now granted a person would have to be much more careful on traveling on the big lakes and plan when to move and where to move to but you can cover from Minnesota to the Atlantic if you so desire.

You may only wanna do it for 2-3 yrs, but you have no taxes,no lawn to mow, no neighbors, no winters, no utilities etc, etc, when you tire of it you buy a travel trailer and see the rest of the USA.

I have not done any river trips, but am strongly thinking about picking up a couple of canoes as there's some local waterways I would like to explore.

Brent, cheeser, onepointer I always loved waterways but my husband got sea sick easy so we compromised and stayed on rivers which I enjoyed--but--after he passed, I bought a sail boat, took sailing lessons and sailed to every port in the Mediterranean. This worked well for me, as I always loved the various countries in Europe and was able to dock and take trains to various countries in Europe. I traveled with other friends who had lost their husbands as well as my daughter, son and granddaughter when they could get off work or out of school a win-win-win for me. Guy, David and a couple others here who have known me for years will remember how hard it was for me to give up sailing when my age and health would not let me continue. But I will always be grateful I got to do it so gentlemen whether it is a houseboat or canoe, my advise to you is ---do it! You will not regret it IMHO
