Iowa legislative session 2026

My Email to house Natural resources committee:

HF2112 drones for deer retrieval

[City] resident, opposed.

I’d like to see the bill amended to exclude drone use on public land. Even better, another bill banning use of drones on IA public hunting land during deer and turkey seasons.

I’m an Iowa public land hunter of 23 years. I hunt for solitude and enjoyment of nature. I hunt about 60 days per year. Drones ruin the experience. I cannot avoid the drones if other hunters are using them when they’re allowed on every public parcel.

Thank you for your time and consideration, [name, phone #]
I certainly agree in wanting peace and solitude. I’m conflicted on things that improve recovery as more recovery and less loss seems like a good thing.

No mixed feelings here. I think drones have their place in many aspects of today’s society, but they are to ripe for abuse in hunting. We are already seeing cases in other states against drones for poaching.

I’d imagine about 50% of traffic would be locating bedded deer and then shooting them.

Also imagine shotgun season which is about 80% deer drives. Everyone flings a bunch of lead, then zooms a drone around the entire area to see what got hit.

Same last year w/ the public land “ATV deer retrieval” bill. So easy to abuse. Had a kid zooming around on a dirt bike in a no motorized vehicle area yesterday when I was shed hunting on public land.

People have been flinging lead on deer drives way before there were drones. Not sure you can stop people from being a-holes.

If something is legal, morally dictating how it is used through legislation is difficult. In the end, the problem is enforcement. See example of bikes and ATVs on closed trails.
Exactly why drones for hunting shouldn’t be allowed to begin with. Give an inch and they’ll take a foot. Give a foot and they’ll take a mile.

That is not an argument against this bill. That is the Luddite argument against technology. If they are going to break the law by going a mile, they probably don’t need approval for the inch. That’s my point.

It’s no secret that the republicans are feeling heat from a serious democrat candidate for governor. The rumor mill is spinning full speed that they are going to try and push several bills through to weaken public lands, the Iowa dnr, and county conservation.
We should elect all Left wing Democrats. Every Governor, Senator and Representative. And elect Gavin Newsom as our next president.

ACTION ALERT

HF 2657

Introduced today - expands hunting and fishing residency to anyone filing a IA tax return with the last 24 months. Basically anyone could loophole around to pay resident prices.

Note, not income tax return, ANY tax return!

Email House Committee on State Government members to express your opinions. Please help support resident preference for hunting and fishing opportunities. Thanks!!

That would essentially make any NR landowner who has rent income or crp income a resident.

That’s the whole idea. It’s all about NR any sex deer tags. Austin Harris at it again. I’m about ready to donate to the campaign of whomever runs against him.

Please pull this bill. While not stated explicitly, this bill is 100% about giving away deer tags to hunters who live in other States, with zero corresponding benefit to Iowans.
Iowa is the world’s crown jewel for whitetail deer hunting, for 2 main reasons: No gun season in November, and restricted nonresident deer hunting opportunity. The best possible course of action in maintaining this is making NO changes in the laws relating to it.

Iowa’s wildlife are held in trust for the benefit of our residents. Giving many thousands of hunters in other States unlimited deer tags greatly degrades the experience of resident hunters, as there are only so many places to hunt here. Nonresident deer tags are capped at 6000 per year. This is sustainable considering that just 12% of Iowa is forested, and our State ranks 49 of 50 in publicly accessible hunting acres.

The inevitable outcome of this bill is Iowa becomes inundated with nonresident deer hunters, as they will come up with creative ways to have to file a tax return. This does not mean contributing to Iowa’s economy, but rather creative accounting to bypass the $1000+ deer hunting fee we charge guests for the privilege of hunting deer in our State.

Additionally, this bill would grant every nonresident landowner deer tags. Every legislative session this group petitions for hunting access on par with residents, with nothing given in return. This bill is yet another backdoor attempt to accomplish their goals. Please limit legislation to bills for the benefit of Iowans and not people living in other States.

Thank you for your time and consideration,
