Iowa legislative session 2026

I can’t wrap my head around this phenomenon that, as public servants, when faced with strong disapproval from the public, the selected course of action is to double down on stupid instead of maybe pump the brakes.

Good luck out there.
Thank you.

It’s similar to at the national level, the money is coming from elsewhere but the same players introduce the same things every year. Each year they get a little more brazen.

Eventually, they will hit it out of the park

Sadly, there will be no recovery once it happens.

Minnesota has our own threats to public property, although they have much more of it and a much better attitude towards it politically. Right now, those threats are coming from the federal side.

Yea. The BWCA is back in the news and it’s not because permits open next week. 🥲

Minnesota is the target and it game on, anything goes as far as the feds are concerned.

Once these things happen, there is no going back. No quick, or even slow, fix.

Meanwhile, everyone will continue to toe the party line.

The thing that rubs me wrong the most is the party for private property rights is trying to tell landiwners what they can and can’t do with their property and people are all ok with it. And I’m tired of the “new farmers need that ground to begin farming” bullshit! The ground that the dnr is buying for the public is not being farmed now because it’s to wet or to steep or to rocky but you want a beginning farmer to start a farm on it?

Politicians of both stripes have always hidden behind the "family farm" and "small businesses". Both were basically dead and gone, long ago.

I sat in on a zoom meeting for IWLL this morning. It’s the same stuff they ve been saying for 16 years. At this point it’s just as much the D’s fault as the R’s. They are too scared to even introduce a bill to increase the sales tax which would trigger the trust fund. Ever year they say, we don’t have to votes or it’s an election year or whatever other excuse they can think of.

THE PEOPLE VOTED FOR IT, now do it!

I’m not doing a good job of keeping this up to date.

A bill was introduced this week to protect black bears in Iowa. Right now they are not recognized and there is no repercussions for killing, harming, or harassing one. The bill is poorly written and leading many to believe that a hunting season will be in place immediately. That is not true, but it is the first step if a bear hunting season ever were to be in Iowa even if it’s not in my lifetime. The sierra club is in favor. As well as most conservation organizations.

How is it poorly written. Iowa's open season on bears has been an embarrassment.
I agree it’s an embarrassment, but to many who would be in favor of protection they have read it meaning there will automatically be a season if it passes. They need to do a better job of stating that when/if the population can support a season there will be a season based on biologists support and recommendations. But until that time it will be illegal to kill or harass bears.
