Just curious for advice/thoughts from those that have spent time in this in unit. Getting ready for the rifle tag to open on Wednesday, I’ve spent a fair amount of time scouting (about 6 days total) and am seeing few deer and fewer bucks. I know this unit isn’t what it used to be, but any advice? I’ve heard closer to the end of the month is better but just curious others thoughts. I’ve seen good bucks on private, but not paying them any attention as they would have zero reason to leave as far as I’m concerned.

Also plan on updating this thread as the hunt goes. This is my sons tag so don’t have as much time as I would like but we’ll be hunting the next two weeks as much as we can.

I've hunted sage grouse in there, and frequently see road killed mulie does on 84 between Bliss and Mountain Home. I'll PM you with a little more details. And have that kid knock on doors, it's harder to say no to a youngster.

Excellent tag in the right situations.

Watch the edge of private. The bucks do cross borders occasionally.

The later part of the season argument would be the deer migration from 44. Pray for snow.

I am praying for snow, have the rest of today and this will be the last scouting trip before the hunt starts. Only managed a few does this morning and the worlds smallest two point.

You’re right that unit’s been tougher the last few years. Early in the rifle season the bucks tend to stay high or hang tight on private, especially if weather’s mild. Once temps drop or we get a little snow, they start moving lower and become more visible. I’d focus on north-facing slopes, shaded timber edges, and transition zones at first and last light. Don’t get discouraged the later part of the season usually brings better movement. Stay patient and keep glassing those mid-elevation pockets.

I think that unit can be a pain in the arse. I had the august bull tag. My freinds had the tag 2 years ago and they got 2 nice bucks. Hunted 17 days

Yeah staying patient and taking the time but still not seeing much for bucks. One 24ish inch 160 type buck but that’s been the extent of deer. Seeing bulls left and right that’s for sure.
