I also used to hunt with my father out west from Michigan. But even that showed me he wasn't really into the same style of hunting as me. He was used to Michigan "deer camp" where you go to the same spot every morning for 20 years in a row and sip your coffee until a spike walks bye. It was good bonding time, but not ideal for western public land elk hunting.
I tried recruiting friends, but even that becomes difficult. Because of their jobs and family responsibilities, its difficult to line up time together with people who aren't willing to apply for any and everything available to hunt. Ive gone on a couple trip with friends, but the last 3 years, its been almost exclusively solo trips.
I used the "find a hunting partner" page here on HT and even lined up with some people who aligned with my hunting style and intentions for the hunt. @Clarq and I had even applied as a party app last year for a cow tag in Wyoming and drew the tag. But a sheep tag for him in another state and a leftover Wyoming tag I drew, that we both hunted solo, ended up throwing a wrench in our plans that we had for a few months. But the great thing about that is we both hunted solo and still applied together for a variety of tags together this year. It will line up when it lines up. But waiting on other people in order to be able to hunt out west is not something I want to do. I want to hunt every year and going solo is fine by me.
