Just called today and got my subscription and I am getting 2 browning knives since I orderd during the offer.Hopefully they have good steel and ar not cheap china blades like most other free knives I have gotten. For those that get the mag is it worth the $100.00?

Got the Browning set last year. They are actually very nice knives..doubt they are worth $100 but are a very nice extra.

I get the mag and I like it a lot. Worth the $100 to me...I just renewed yesterday.

Sorry to disappoint about the knives, but you will probably give them as gifts to someone.

As far as it being worth the $100. Probably depends on your own intersection of price to value.

It is worth it to me for the following reasons.

1. It helps me not forget about deadlines, which I usually don't (except South Dakota), as I have them all on my Outlook calendar for electronic reminders.

2. It tells me where most everyone else will be applying and allows me to apply elsewhere, unless I am at the top of the point pile and know I will draw whatever I apply for.

3. Is fun to look at pictures of big critters, even if many of the stories leave a lot to be desired.

I think some websites allow you to get better information, see pictures of big critters, and read better stories (such as Bugler's AZ deer thread), all for free. But, I am probably biased in that impression. :D

Thanks guys I have a very nice US steel gerber caper that will stay in my pack or on my side during hunts doing the majority of my work and I will keep the other ones around for camp knives if I keep them.Fin when you say it tells you where most everyone will be applying do you mean that the mag acctually tells you that or do you figure most will apply in the top units the recommend?

I subscribed for a few years. After a while all the magazine articles and hero shots start to run together for me. I got a good tag, I scouted a bunch, and I got a great buck. Blah, blah, blah.

I wish they didn’t rank areas. Just listed the top picks for any given state. I finally stopped subscribing mostly because I didn’t want my $100 going towards a landowner voucher so they could azz rape the local bucks.

They have an application service, along with their magazine. Most of their customers using the application service ask to be put in for the top units on the recommended list, so that puts a bunch of poeple into the draw for those units.

Also, hunters, being like most humans, are inherently looking for the easiest path. The easiest path for guys who are real busy is to look at the top few units and put those on their app.

And, some guys are more excited about telling all their buddies they drew unit "XYZ." Some of them apply for these glory units just for the excitement of having the tag, even if they won't hunt it that hard.

If you look at the application trends for units they recommend, history shows that the year it hits their top list, the odds go to hell. It happens whenever a unit gets added to their list. That shows me how many people are following their recommendations, which are always solid recommendations.

I just am not going to wait ten years to go on a hunt that is on their list. Give me the left over units and I will be happy as can be, hunting every year or every other year.

I agree with you I would rather hunt as often as I can just like whitetail hunting here in the midwest the more hours you put in the better chance of bagging a decent or trophy buck no matter where you hunt.

So, what areas did they list for CO? I'm curious... does anyone know? I'm grounded in my home area but it would be peace-of-mind knowing it's not in my backyard! Tell me- cause I'm not getting the magazine :D

If your backyard is anywhere near elk units 2, 201, 10, 40, 61, or 76, you are pretty much screwed.

Glad I am sitting on 16 elk points. Will continue with OTC elk until I know I can hunt in your backyard. ;)

Big Fin, I thought you ate your elk application in Wyoming this year. Just what unit can't you draw with max points staying away from the Hunting Fools top picks:)

Nope. Sorry if I psoted something wrong along the way. Thought I had messed up my AZ app by applying as second choice for cow, but lucked out and the one I mailed in was correct.

I would have to look, but if you apply for most any of the WY units that are not on the HF list, you will have a great chance of drawing with max points. Most units you would be guaranteed in the NR special elk draw.

So, basically it's just the "trophy" areas. I can handle that :) Now I just need to coax crittergitter into sharing his unit... I've got $10 just waiting for him. Hear that? Ten... whole... dollars...

$10 bucks aint nothing. I'll be cutting his lawn and washing his truck weekly for a trip down there next year. I'll finish off that monster he missed for him;) thanks matt
