Huckleberrys Are On

We were up above Tollgate poking around this weekend. Walla Walla and Wenaha units. Lots of commercial pickers. Roadsides are picked clean. Best berries are around 5000 feet. We got up on top and hiked in a mile, a little to early up there.
Lots of bear sign.

We went up the South Fork and found quite a few. Planning to make ice cream and go back up there.

Random Memory: Fished the South Fork of the Flathead in September about 15 years ago, and picked up a delicious huckleberry shake right there around the turn off before the long dirt road.

Had a giant bully try to eat a smaller bully I hooked while fishing a breadcrust to a pod of cutties. After an epic battle, the giant let go right at the bank and landed the original.

Very Cool! Curious, are they hard to find in that part of Montana or not too bad?

Depends a lot on how much moisture there has been. They are very prolific and easy to find when it’s a good year.

Areas of higher concentrations are harder to find but generally higher elevations are best.

Vanish that is a beautiful fish. Very cool story.

Hardwood this year they are abundant.
