HSUS in partnership with Idaho Sportsmen's Caucus

Was Camo Day at the Capital a bad thing?

The news reports I saw made it sound like everybody, good/bad/and otherwise was all teaming up to rid this state of the immoral elk game farms where guys raise elk to shoot them as they eat oats in a corral.

I would welcome PETA if it was to help get rid of Elk farms and remove the danger to Idaho's wild elk and our public lands posed by elk farming CWD infested hybrid Red Stag crosses with Elk.

If you go to the website where the HSUS banner is hosted, you can find these quality pictures that show the majesty of Idaho's Elk...

Pretty easy to see why hunters in Idaho and the West want these stopped.

Damn that is pathetic... Gee I agree with most of Jose`s post Except P.E.T.A.... No way Jose.... but thanks for the pics....creepy looking Elk.

If the HSUS and/or PETA want to join sportsmen/hunters in the elimination of elk farms, what is the problem with that? I know I don't have a problem with it. Why would we want to support elk farms just so we can be on the opposite side of the anti-hunting organizations? So in this case the HSUS happens to be RIGHT, so IdahoWapiti, are you saying we as hunters, should support the elk farmers who are WRONG??? If hunters in general were to support elk farming, high-fence hunts, and the exploitation of elk in general, don't you think this would prove to the anti-hunters that they are right in thinking that we are all just blood thirsty killlers who hunt for no reason other than we enjoy killing things???

I am not judging you as a person, as I do not know you. But I oppose the commercialization of any of our native big game animals, and especially private ownership of those animals. Simple as that. It is too bad you decided to get into the business of elk farming. Hopefully you won't be hurt too bad financially when Idaho puts tighter restrictions on elk farms, or bans them entirely.

I understand your argument about the fish and the birds. For one thing pheasants and chukars don't have a negative affect on wild bird populations. Now the fish hatcheries, I personally would almost like to see them eliminated. All they are is a band aid to the real problem of destruction of the habitat that wild fish need to survive. If it wasn't for salmon and steelhead hatcheries, I believe fish habitat would be a much higher priority and would have been given attention before wild fish populations declined as much as they did.

and their rally the week before had 3 times the turnout and no affiliations with anti-hunters.

Do you have the numbers for each rally?

We actually want more regulation through licensing so people like Rammell can't operate.

Have the ID elk farmers lobbied for this type of licensing at legislative sessions last year or in other past years?

There was one domestic cow elk of Rammell's (who had 'the escape') that tested suspect at a lab that has tested several wild elk that were shown to have red deer genes (false positives), but she never escaped and was slaughtered

Lucky she wasn't one of the elk that escaped, huh? That was a close call!

Deer Hunters of Idaho are part of the Caucus. So, now, they're a partner of HSUS?

Ithaca,

Most of the Republicans were opposed to the banning of game farms. That's why we went to the referendum process. The citizens of the state outlawed the game farms, (canned hunt part only) and the transfer of the licence to anyone else.. You can still raise elk, just not sell hunts. Some game farms are still in business because they truck the elk to farms in other states and release the willey old bulls.

IW, I don't shoot farm birds, nor do I go to fish farms. I fish a few bodies of water that contain hatchery trout from state hatcheries and its not the same as catching a wild trout.

What do you teach people about elk when they tour your farm? Do you think its good to teach people that elk are livestock?

Heads up everyone!!!

Anyone that thinks that the HSUS and PETA have any interest in helping recreational hunters or fisherman has no idea what those two organizations are about. The HSUS is almost a completely virtual organization with a staff of people that promote the full protection of all animals everywhere. PETA, probably the more dangerous of the two, supports and approves actions by some of the most violent terrorist organizations on the face of the earth.

Do you think they want to help hunters? Anyone that believes that probably sends money to Nigeria hoping to make a million on a sweet deal they received in an anonymous email.

As for elk or deer farms, they are probably at the root of the CWD disaster. This compounded with the interbreeding with red deer would make this an industry that should be highly scrutinized/regulated or terminated if regulation didn't prove effective.

As for hunting the high fence - elk/deer farm operation, It doesn't matter how the animals are killed. They can be taken to a slaughterhouse or a person can pay to shoot one. I don't really consider that hunting, it becomes more a shooting situation. But as long as someone will pay someone will offer the opportunity. Simply shutting down the hunting/shooting part without stopping the farming is just a "feel-good" move, a bandaid on a bigger problem.

I don't think you can point fingers at one political party or the other as far as controlling this goes. Both sides are guilty of activity or inactivity on subjects like this, it all hinges on who's paying their bills.

como308, I think everyone is aware of the motives and priorities of the HSUS and PETA. But I am not going to change my stance on elk farms, and support them, just so I can disagree with the anti-hunter's point of view. The anti-hunting groups happen to be right in this case.

That is why the Intiative process is so good. At that point in time there were not the votes in the legislature to outlaw high fenced hunting. I wish Idaho would get it's act together and ban selling "hunt" as well.

Politics makes some very strange bedfellows. HSUS membership is probably questioning what the hell their organization is doing ever hooking up with hunters.

Camo308,
Are you not sophisticated enough to understand that sometimes you work with your adversaries on some issues, and other issues you battle them to the end?

There is nothing wrong with everybody jumping on the bandwagon to get rid of Elk Farms in Idaho. The more the merrier.
