Before your fall season officially kicks off?


My calendar says:

-8 weeks before Colorado cow elk

-10 weeks before Colorado deer and Wyoming cow elk

-15 weeks before I get serious about Indiana deer

-18 weeks before South Dakota and Wyoming deer


I am ready to be shed of the bugs, heat, and humidity. I'm looking forward to crisp and cool mornings, heavy packs, steep slopes, prairie winds, and long hours spent in trees.


What do other Hunt-Talkers have lined up, and how long before you get it going?

First weekend December NM cow elk.

36 days until I fly out for Caribou

The 1st of September I'll be ground-sluicing delectable Blue Grouse with my boy on the crests of the Nameless Range - so 46 days.

in a few weeks i'll do some scouting

a few weeks after that i'll do some more scouting

then, maybe i'll do one more scouting trip

then, a couple weeks after that i'll go scouting with a rifle.

29 days until my muzzle loader antelope

8 weeks til early bow special reduction season down in Indiana where son has a lease. Hopefully my meniscus surgery will be recovered enough. One week post surgery knee is giving me fits. Three tears might be cause.

I didn't draw anything this year =/. But I picked up a NM OTC Turkey tag and I'll go sit under a tree making squeaky noises

I've had too much other crap on my plate to think about hunting season. I know I've got a WY mule deer hunt for certain. Pheasant in SD and bear in WV are up in the air.

Doves start September 6th.
Season never really closes with me having traps out pretty much year-round now.

A lot depends on the Alaska Subsistence Board decision on whether NR will be allowed in Unit 2.

Could be chasing Idaho alfalfa fed cow elk Aug 1st. Definitely taking Miss T out for that if she finds room in her modern High School student (over)schedule.

13 weeks until I leave for my 36th trip to Chama for my annual elk hunting trip. That's it, can't afford to go anywhere else.

This will be the earliest my "Fall" has ever started.



13 days till I leave for my NV/UT antelope hunt 15 till I'll be actually hunting.



Nov 1st-5th I'll be in SW NM deer hunting with a muzzleloader trying for my 3rd time to kill a coues deer. Third times a charm right?




December I'll be chasing mule deer in the TX panhandle.





That's it for my out of state hunts this year. Have a lot planned here at home as well.


Gonna take the boy out of school on Sept 1st to shoot dove then I'm sure I'll find time to get out a few more times to sack some up.



Oct 1st our deer archery opens but I don't get excited about chasing deer anymore till around Halloween. Our youth rifle opens before Halloween and I'll take some kids out.


When I get back from NM I'll have just over a week to stick a buck with my bow before our rifle season opens and I turn into a guide/host more then a hunter.



I also will do some duck hunting at some point this year been seriously slacking in that department the last few years.
