i do say this as a joke.

but it's also underlying seriousness.

at least in the hunting space, whenever i come into excess discretionary cash, going hunting is the first priority of its potential use (special apps wyo, additional apps in states i don't usually apply in, pulling the trigger on a NR tag i can draw that i normally wouldn't due to cost, etc.). the priority is rarely if ever things for hunting - there are so few hunting "things" that are "needed."

same goes for things like bikes and stuff. nobody has time to mountain bike anymore; i'd rather spend it on the special draw.

but, if i came into some serious excess discretionary cash, the thing for hunting i would buy that i don't technically need is some high society glass.

Also let's not forget he could wait till @Oak opens up the raffles and buy a fistful of sheep tickets. It's a donation to a worthy cause with the chance of getting a tag of a lifetime.

A compromise to a cap would be the undercover armorflex covers. I really like mine and if you need to use the truck bed you just flip it up. If you need to take it off it takes one person like 2 minutes.

Lets you keep crap in the bed and not worry about it getting stolen or rained on.

Personally I'd spend it on a nice rifle with nice glass, I own a bunch of rifles, once I got my hands on a truly nice custom rifle I probably haven't shot more than a dozen rounds through all the others, get a tikka, proof barrel in something easy to shoot, carbon stock, arca rail, brake or suppressor, and nice bipod/tripod setup and it kinda revolutionizes the whole shooting experience.

Unconvinced that I actually want to muzzleload hunt. There are sure a lot of horror stories about hitting, even knocking things down, but then still losing them with little to no blood trail.

There's an idea that may not have been mentioned. Cheaper than some of the options, but this was my first year hunting with a suppressor and I never want to go back. My vote is Softopper and a can, and you still have beer money left over from the price of a fiberglass cap.

That's my issue with them. If someone wanted something in it, seems like it would be pretty easy to get it. Half the reason I have a topper is the peace of mind of being able to lock it up.

My feeling is that if somebody wants something bad enough, breaking a window in a topper isn't that much harder than opening a Softopper. Anything to discourage the random walker-by just reaching into an open bed is about as good as anything else, I reckon.

Longer range shooting is magnitudes more about the shooter than the rifle or cartridge.

Spend the money more on learning and ammo than gear. A 270s only limitation is lower BC bullets and factory twist rate when compared to options up or down a step in bore size. That said, there are ammo options that will be real close to keeping up with creedmoor wind deflection #'s while beating it easily in drop. The benefit of the 6 and 6.5 creedmoor is quality ammo for cheap and low recoil which makes putting more rounds down range more appetizing. I like the 6 creed for being a little lower recoil and flatter than the 6.5 which allows a shorter barrel and suppressor without velocity getting pretty pedestrian. Frangible high sectional density 6mm bullets kill stuff plenty dead.

You could easily get a 6.5 creed takeoff barrel (I have 2 in the safe) and spin it on your tikka for cheap and spend the $ on ammo and a suppressor.

In eastern Montana several years ago we had some guys pull over next to my buddy's truck and try all the doors and windows. We were shouting and running back and they eventually left unsuccessfully. But it had been a soft top they would have taken everything.

New mountain bikes are pretty incredibly capable and fun when compared to something from 20 years ago. But maybe only worth it if you spend a bunch of time biking.
