Help an elk calling newbie out!

Just got my diaphragm elk call, and have been playing with it a lot. Took a while to get a sound out, but I can make a lot of noise now. I wanted to ask some real basic questions regarding calling elk. These different scenarios are all assuming we have heard a bull over a ridge, or maybe we glassed one and just need to call him in 100 more yards or so.

1. I go hunting with a partner, would it be wise for me to stay back 50 yards or so, and call from there hoping my partner can cut them off before they see me? Or should we be together? I heard a podcast saying to make an elk call, then move 40 yards in a crescent pattern and look at the place you called from.

2. How often should I be calling? How much is to much? Maybe once every mile or so of hiking?

3. Assuming you are in the peak of rut, is it better to bugle or do a cow call?

4. Any other advice?

I know a lot of this is dependent on how they are responding, and what mood they are in etc… Just curious on some of the things that have worked for you when elk calling.
