Took grandson to his second class tonight. Minding my own business and ended helping out when it came time to handle different weapons outside. Oh sh...t! Attempted to beg out, but not enough adults. "Don't give me any shotguns other than a single B/O, please." (do not birds hunt other than grouse with single-shot).
Ended up with a Marlin lever and a B/O 12 GA.. Lever was not much of a deal, but some of the skinny little kids couldn't break open the shotgun.I thought my grandsons asked a lot of questions, but jeez, they had my mind racing with questions.By the end, was addressed as grandpa by several of them. Okay by me. Just don't need another retirement deal, but now I am hooked on the kids. Somebody talk me out of getting certified to do this........

You will get out of it twice what you put into it.

If you have any questions, let me know. I have been doing it about 14 years and have probably made every mistake there is. Twice.

A huge Congrats to you,,what a great thing to do for the kids,,I have 5 grandchildren to take elk hunting this year for their first time,,its gonna be alot of fun

Just don't need another retirement deal, but now I am hooked on the kids. Somebody talk me out of getting certified to do this........

Getting certified as a educator for F&G is easy.

Being an instructor is the hard part.

Once you get thru the certification, you are ON YOUR OWN, completely.

You will need to find another instructor who will let you assist/help his class from the list given by F&G. Once you feel competent to teach 20 10-11-12 year olds, you are free to teach them........ as soon as you find a place to teach...... and find somewhere to schedule the dates....... and then find a rod and gun club to allow you to have the range session..... and find a way to publicize it.....


I haven't done it for a few years, but, I have to say that the State of Idaho was allowing a lot of good resources to walk away due to the lack of a support system for a requirement that was mandated by the legislature.

Teaching kids about safety is rewarding. Calling churches, libraries, Gun Clubs, community halls trying to get them to block you out a bunch of time for a bunch of 11 year olds and a bunch of guns is not as rewarding.
