When your buddy asks if you want to come along on their horsepack in elk hunt in the Wyoming wilderness and get an elk tag through Hunting for Heroes Wyoming, the correct answer is “I’ll get my hat!”
I had a fantastic time in the Gros Ventre Wilderness last week with some old and new friends including four other vets. Elk were a little thin, but we did get into them, I called in and shot this 5-point and one guy got a nice muley buck. We heard wolves every night, saw bighorn sheep, fox, and even a mole inside the spectacular landscape of the Grand Tetons. We hardly ever rolled a pack horse down the mountain or fell off the saddle, it was awesome.
The older fellas said that elk used to be much thicker in there. I learned a lot about hunting elk around wolves. Which, I suppose, is a good thing for a Colorado hunter. I don't think an elk can be any smaller and still be a 5-point. But, I'll take it, it's still a trophy in my book.
If you're a vet with a VA file, by all means get signed up for the Hunting with Heroes program. https://huntingwithheroes.org/ Hunting With Heroes Wyoming They didn't bankroll the trip or anything, but they did get me an elk tag. They have a good pass-through system in WY where, if someone wants to donate a tag (like your buddy's wife) they can pass it through HWH to assign it to a specific vet who's in their system.
And if you need anything horse-related, training or whatever, Elliston is your guy, he's a wizard with horse and pack. https://www.ellistonequinesolutions.org/ Elliston Equine Solutions
