Not supposed to be any griz in Unit 6, but any more I take the approach they could be anywhere.
The article doesn't say what hunting method the shooter was using.

I feel for this guy, but I am on record as saying not to be this guy. Be sure or don't shoot!

FWIW - the 2023-2024 IDFG Big Game pamphlet has a warning for GMU 6 "Caution: grizzly bears may be encountered"

Does Idaho require passing a bear identification test to hunt? Just wondering ... Montana does, not that taking a test would mean never misidentifying.

Montana does require an identification test. mtmuley

Just wanted to follow up on this story. There was a bit more to it, turns out the hunter sent a video to IDFG and unfortunately sounds like they misidentified it.

Okay, that's kind of funny that G&F was like nah that's not a grizzly. So he shot it...

I'm not that motivated to shoot a bear. If I have any doubts its a no shoot situation.

20 years ago I watched a cinnamon at 75 yards across a steep Idaho creek. The bear was sitting on its haunches watching me back. This went on for several minutes. Something didn't feel right. I finally convinced myself I wanted the bear. I had just taken the safety off and then saw movement with my off scope eye. Two cubs came out of the brush. Game over.

Coming that close to a difficult chat with a Conservation Officer has left a lasting impression on me.

I wonder if the recent media-driven rise in Spring Bear hunting contributes to performance pressure to some hunter.

Absolutely.

I’d hate to see the video from that guy at 2am asking if the girl he picked up is pretty.
My friends would have said go for it and ridiculed me ever after.

Trying to think of a joke about how quick that video was that won't get me in trouble...

Per my earlier post, performance pressure and a rapid conclusion.

Griz in Unit 6. Who woulda thunk it. Got my first black bear in that unit back in the 1980s. The video makes it pretty clear: Immature grizzly. Looks like IFG needs to up its training course for staff and hunters alike. Since I'm here, let me start a fight: bear baiting in grizzly country (or potential grizzly country) is bad news, especially in the lower 48 where there is bound to be a house over the next ridge, or closer. Change my mind.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they changed the baiting rules in unit 6. Maybe not, but seems plausible.
