People forget that Flick saw a grizzly bear near Pulaski's candy store and that was in the late 1940's in Hohman Indiana.

Just like lions in Michigan, the DNR won't admit to Grizz in Indiana, Ohio or Iowa.
Makes sense to me for Iowa and Michigan, being on the edge of the Great Plains, so maybe an individual here and there that roamed beyond that occasionally. Grizzlies were historically Plains animals, as demonstrated by a few of their characteristics– long claws for digging dens and to forage (which also challenges them in effectively climbing trees, which was OK because there weren’t many anyway), large shoulder muscles for digging, Grizzly sows who stand their ground instead of sending cubs up a tree, etc. digging dens because the Prairie didn’t offer as many hibernation options as treed areas.

In this modern era, it definitely appears that state Wildlife agencies are reluctant to acknowledge the presence of Cougars on the landscape! I believe their resistance in doing so is because they would then for the need to establish management plans for these animals.
