I've never been accused of being the sharpest knife in the drawer. But I had an unexpected epiphany yesterday. I volunteered to help with the Train To Hunt Colorado event yesterday since it was practically in my backyard. I wound up judging the first 3D shooting station in the afternoon run-your-guts-out-with-50-pounds-on-your-back-after-a-full-crossfit-regimen-shooting-3D-targets-along-the-way event. I'm sure they have a name for it. Anyway, it was fascinating to have about 80 people come through sporting their pack, bow setup, rangefinder, boots, shoes, etc. It was a great way to see what works and what doesn't. It's Colorado, so for packs there were a lot of Kifaru, but others like Mystery Ranch, Eberlestock, Seek Outside, and a few others all made a good showing. Two runners showed up with sternum straps that had just broken. Many runners were struggling with their gear, but most were not, so I took notes.
My point is, I read endless posts about what gear works and what doesn't. I've been just as guilty over the years. If a person is wondering about gear, volunteering or just wandering around one of these events is a great, zero-cost, way to check out a pile of gear. Most are happy to give you their opinions and let you get your hands on gear in the down time.
Plus it was a blast and a great group of folks. I took the whole family up to help. I'm all for exposing the kids to hard work in any form.
