Has anyone heard whether or not the NWR's will be closed for the shutdown? I've been drawn for an archery hunt at Aransas NWR starting this weekend and I don't know if the hunt has been cancelled/

Each bureau and department will vary. Guidance was being drafted last night and will filter down today. I would give you NWR office the morning then call them for the most current information.

In our region, and in general, the land should be open as per usual where access is self-administered. I think activities that are self administered like you sign yourself in, no one has to check you in or issue you a spot, etc are in most cases still open. Anything that requires controlled access (like actual staff have to let you in, issue you a spot, etc) might be more spotty. Visitor centers and programs will be closed. LE are still working, folks managing like high hazard dams and such are still working, a few fire are still working/on call but pretty much everyone else in Refuges has been sent home.

I celebrated the shutdown last night after watching one of my best friends shoot a Colorado bighorn ram. He earned it after 17 days of hunting. About the time the clock ticked midnight on the East coast and the shutdown became official we were finishing up loading our packs with meat, horns, and the cape. Made it to the truck at 12:33 last night.

My buddy said, "hey, I'm naming this my shutdown ram"

Congress is totally dysfunctional, their job is to pass a budget by September 30 and they rarely get it done. Its not an R or D thing, its all of them. Its not like they're "caught off guard", they all know when the fiscal year ends.

Sad that federal workers are used like this by the incompetent Congress and administration that can't pass a budget on time.

What a joke.

We were visiting the Lincoln Memorial during a long ago shut down. There were temporary barricades ringing the structure, with a multitude of uniformed DC police and Park Rangers there to make certain that no one crossed the barricade to walk up the steps to the "closed" Memorial.

Such a farce then and now. Each side taking the exact opposite position, depending on which party is in the White House.

Hey at least this happens during hunting season where you can take advantage of the days out of work!

Ever think if they had to prorate federal taxes during a shutdown that they would always come to an agreement on time?

It's not looking good. I've tried to call and no one is answering the phone. I guess my hunting trip just turned into a fishing trip. To the good folks that aren't able to work and get paid because of the idiots in congress, I hope yall do ok and it ends up being just a short vacation,

It becomes increasingly clear that R and D are just two wings of the same bird. Something is going to have to give eventually. In the meantime, everyone else has to pay for their buffoonery.

That really sucks. Sorry to hear this.

This is an interesting question because TPWD says "Hunts are conducted by National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) staff. NWR rules and regulations will apply. Hunts may or may not be supervised". But then the refuge site says hunts are self-guided, but you have to check in every day with their "Self-Clearing Check-in Permit". And it seems like those are only available at the check station. I can't find anything online about if the check station is run by an employee or if a hunter could use it by themselves. My assumption would be an employee would have to be there to open it up at least, seems like there are some actual facilities there. That would be my question though, if there's any way to get the daily access permits without an employee being present. Without that, I'm not sure.

Talked to nwr where I’m moose hunting everything is good to go.
Opposite for me. Called Fort Carson wildlife and they said no access to hunting in my Colorado PCMS unit that was only going to be open weekends already. So almost 500.00 and 16 points down the shitter. So far Colorado says too bad if it isn't open. I'm not driving 18 hours solo to go fishing. Just unloaded hunting gear from truck and going on a 4 day trip to the UP instead.
