Gobble gobble Spring Turkey 2025

First day out with my daughter. At the last minute I changed my mind about which public spot to hunt. As we are pulling up there is a strutter in the parking lot 😂

I want her to have an actual hunting experience, so we parked elsewhere and looped around 1/4 mile or so. We got set up and took turns calling.

After 45 minutes of seeing and hearing nothing I ask if she wants to stay or leave, and she said let’s go back to the truck to get the snacks we had left in a hurry. I take one final look around and there is the tom coming in! I positioned to shoot and she kept the bird interested with a push button call. At 35 yards I got too excited and missed…twice 😆😆 We both got a good laugh.

She wanted to pick up trash next, so we did that for about a half hour, then back to get snacks.

NY opened Thursday….heard a few way off as the first birds sounded around 530. Made my way around a big bowl to close the distance. 2 groups were several hundred yds below on private property. Got some interest, but was not close enough to feel in the game. Around 730 the further away group made a move up the hill closer to the line, but further down ridge. I decided to bail on the ones directly below me and see how far across the line these ones were. As I closed the distance they got hotter and hotter all on their own. Once setup got an immediate response. Ended up being 2 long beards. The dominant bird hung up just on the other side of an old blow down at 45-50 yds strutting and gobbling. His buddy was very suspicious and stood like a statue the entire time staring me down. Only thing I think that saved me was every time the dominant bird gobbled it would cause the suspicious one to gobble on top of him and that seemed to distract him just enough. Also a big black squirrel was jumping all around at about 5 yds from me at this same time, which also seemed to help, lol. Finally the dominant bird jumped up onto that blow down and went right into strut up on his perch. I figured he was 40-45 and I felt like I was on borrowed time already with the suspicious one, so soon as he came out of strut I pulled the trigger and knocked him off the log.

Boy had of Friday off from school so decided to try our luck in the same area again. Long hard morning, lots of miles and elevation for 2 gobbles, (1) at 9 and (1) at 11. Would have thought either one could have produced as both fairly close, but neither ended up gobbling again. Gave them both nearly an hour to no avail. Did see a new fawn, which was probably more rare and maybe even more cool than success with the birds.

Opener in PA today. Was a soaker. Left for the house around 8AM after zero gobbles. Got some coffee and put the clothes in the dryer. Headed back out at 9 for soaker round 2. Made a big loop calling as we went. Nothing till 11am when we finally got a response just as the rain was finally lightening up. Frantic mode getting trees picked out and glove/facemasks up. Birds were on us in less than 2 minutes I would say. They came by skirting at 55-60….with nothing to lose l let out a soft yelp and the 3rd bird hammered and stopped in his tracks. After what seemed like an eternity, he decided to turn back for a closer look and his buddies followed suit. At about 40 yds we let em have it and doubled up! Persistence paid off.

All in all feeling extremely blessed over the last few days!
