Garmin Spot SOS Button Rescue

That's a good writeup about a bad experience. On my old Spot and on my new InReach Mini, you have to work to get that cover off; no false alarms there. Glad he didn't have a bill for that. I hate that people won't push it just because the fear the cost. The insurance is pretty cheap, ~$20/year.

Exactly why I use a ACR resQlink PLB for backcountry work applications. That scenario can't happen with this unit.
Being a dinosaur, I've never texted anybody in my life yet - I sure as hell have no need to text anyone from some 10000' rockpile. In my case, if I'm out there, people know I am, and when I'll be home. Don't need tell my wife "hi, I'm not dead". Texters gotta text I guess:D.
If real shit does hit the fan, I would raise the PLB antenna, turn the unit on, and hit the panic button. The cavalry is on the way.
Being 56 and spending a lotta hours alone out there, I bought an InReach for personal use. Not really fond of paying the subscription nor the unit itself. I know they're popular...
I might just buy another PLB for personal use......
