Going through some old photos - brook trout or bull trout?

Wish I had better pictures. I remember seeing something like a “Careful bull trout live here” type sign in the area

Central Idaho

From the prominent white leading edge on the ventral fin I’d lean towards Brook. Hard to confirm with the picture.

If you look at the dorsal fin and see black spots it would be a brook. Haloes around the spots can also help.

If in doubt release it.

I don't see any red spots so it must be a Bull trout. The one fish that eats most of the Salmon and steelhead eggs in Idaho. Why it is protected is beyond me.

On smaller fish I always look at the back around the dorsal fin. Brook trout will have yellow-ish squiggly marks, bull trout will have yellow-ish spots. And of course if you're in a place where there's a lot of hybridization, the odds of it being purely one or the other go way down, and you're likely to have a mutt in your hands.

Maybe mutt or brook! Doesn’t seem to have halos but does appear to have some squiggles near the top of his head if you zoom in

Thanks!

Here's a brookie. Looks about the same except this was taken on a cloudy day 20250811_094722.jpg

Very pale brookie, guessing female.

Line of faint red dots below the lateral line, vermiculations present on the back, and black is visible in the anal fin.

The head proportions are also way off- bull trout at that size have a larger head in comparison to the body, and they seem to be more “cylindrical” than tall with flat sides like brookies.

The ones I’ve held that size also have a round nose like an alligator compared to the more pointed snout of a brookie.
