Hello crew-- long time deer hunter going on my first elk hunt this fall and winter. I got a cow tag in southern Wyoming. My tag timeline spans from October to February. Questions include -- what time of year should I strive for? How does elk hunting differ from deer hunting, specifically any specific gear or strategy to keep in mind that wouldn't be utilized in deer hunts? Are calls used only for bull elks or is it something I will need to practice and use for cows as well? Thanks for any help!

I'm sure people can help you on the time of year but to bring you up to speed on how to hunt them.... I'd look into randy's youtube page and watch his episodes, there's a lot of good information there as well as his TV shows b/c he explains a lot of what he's doing and why.

No idea where you will be, but, around here the cows move in November and December. Wyoming has some clear spots if I recall. Figger out on a map a large section of public, talk to the local officer, try to determine historic movement patterns. Then, when the season rolls up, get up high and glass. I suspect you will find what you are looking for pretty easy on cold clear days right before/after a snowstorm.
