Thought I would share our family trip a couple weekends ago up in the Bighorns. My wife had given me some gift certificates for a lodge up there off of 14a. We finally decided on a time frame and headed up. The weather up there was wonderful, highs in the 70’s lows in the 40’s-50’s. It was a wonderful break from the wicked heat in the Billings area. The bugs on the other hand were everywhere. We got eaten up, especially my poor little girl. She was a trooper though, didn’t let them bother her at all.
While we were there my wife and daughter both got an up close encounter with a moose for the first time. It came in and walked right behind the cabin so they were both pretty excited. We ended up seeing a number of moose in up there, probably 10-12. We were also lucky enough to get out and do a little bit of hiking, I figured it would be good practice having my daughter in the backpack on my back going down and back.
We decided to head to Porcupine Falls, and we didn’t quite realize how steep this trail actually got until about half way down. It was a decent trail but also a lot of broken, loose rock as well, which made my wife nervous with the kiddo on my back. We did some research after we got home and learned (from what we read anyway) that it’s around 500’ in elevation change in about .3 miles. Needless to say coming out of there was a little bit more work. The view was great and it was absolutely beautiful once we got to the bottom, but the experience as a family was what I’ll never forget. My daughter had a ton of fun and got to try some fishing for the first time. Thought she did not catch anything as 2.5 year old patience is pretty thin, she showed a real interest in it and picked up on the reeling pretty quick. She also had her first experience with some brook trout and helped me release the few I caught.
Overall it was a great trip and I think (or hope) we have an outdoorsy little girl. She already talks about wanting to go fishing and asks me when I am going hunting all the time. I can’t wait until she is old enough to take with and completely understand what is going on. I know it may not to be most exciting adventurous trip amongst people on Hunt Talk but I thought I would share anyway.
