Anybody ever been around a CPM (continuous passive motion) and a Game Ready (cold pressure) machine?

I didn't have any idea I would be doctoring this much after wife's hip surgery today. Checking bandages is kind of a given though. This old phart is kind of stressed right now but know in the weeks to come will figure it out, but kind of freaking.

Some trepidation about the drive from Salt Lake to Boise in the morning doesn't help after getting stuck on I-84 on the way here. Sure got to see some new country between Twin Falls and Burley I would have never seen.

I've seen them on our patients that have had total knees done. Suppose to help quite a bit with recovery, our patients are usually walking the next morning as our physical therapy dept is pretty aggressive. I'm just a pharmacist so I don't know as much about those machines, sorry. Good luck to you and your wife, just make sure your wife follows thru with the physical therapy, it is a must to a full recovery. My wife's grandmother just had her 3rd hip done (same one) but she doesn't do any of the physical therapy! Argh!

For bone healing to occur as fast as possible, there must be inflammation. Non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Aleve and Motrin (ibuprofen) will slow down the healing process on a microscopic level... so its Tylenol and naroctics or Ultram (tramadol) for pain relief. Diets should include adequate calcium with vitamin D for absorption. I assume she is on coumadin so her diet has to be monitored to keep her blood clotting at an appropriate therapuetic level.......(don't do like I did after surgery and forget that coleslaw is a green leafy vegatable prone to messing up the clotting times!! )

Fast healing to her, and good nursing to you.

Had ACL replacement a couple of years ago, those gameready machines are the best way to go for ice/compression if you can afford one for home. I actually looked forward to that machine after physical therapy and used it as much as I possibly could the first four weeks after surgery. Wish I had one of my own for the occasional knee swelling flare up.

Had acl repair on both knees....(CPM) they are intended to get your range of motion back asap...some people call it physical therapy...I called it pain and torture...they do their job well though. If you have any questions I might be able to answer shoot me a PM.....

Thanks gents! Made it home from Salt Lake to Boise in five hours today, so not bad. Had her on ice on the way back and dragged her out of the truck a couple of times for some crutching around. Got her on the CPM as soon as we got home and she was snoring in ten minutes. Just finished up on the Gameready, flow only and compression to start tomorrow. Going to make sure she takes something tonight for pain as her pain block should be almost gone by 11-12ish. Do not want her to get behind on the pain from the start. As to PT- her therapist had the same surgery by the same guy so is on top on it as far as that is concerned. Thanks for the help and if you think of anything let me know.

Hate to admit, she is tougher than I am.
She just wants to get back to hiking with the grandkids this summer and riding the ATV. Sure hope this works, but feel good about it as there wasn't ANY *arther* in her hip joint like they thought. Her PT has already called tonight and talked to her, having gone through the same thing. So feeling is that she is in good hands. Now, if I can just be patient and do the doctoring... to get her over the hump.
