Do I spend 4 hours to try to save this bird?

Those bird ramps like @mtmiller posted are cheap and they work. Or at a minimum put a post or 2x4 in there so they can self-rescue.

Those pics are odd though. He never looked as soaked as I would expect if he was stuck. But I’ve never heard of one hanging out in the water for hours of its own accord either. Maybe there was something else already stuck in there that he was after?

I've got a cedar fence board screwed to one side of my rubber stock tank so the critters can get out. Did that many years ago after finding a dead chipmunk in the tank. We have birds taking baths all the time, some days the birds use the water more than four legged animals

Perfect. I have seen plenty of boards floating in the middle. Birds aren't that smart and will just swim in circles on round tanks.

I really didn’t think anything could get in there other than a bird the way the sides are beyond vertical. I guess looking at the pictures maybe they could climb up the fence post or the water float valve setup.

In that very first picture it does look like it might be grabbing something out of the water.

Will for sure be adding some kind of way for critters to get out if they get in there.

Suppose you could put a board to just float in the tank, but some critters may still have trouble getting out. The way the board is in my tank, it slopes down into the water and no matter the water level, animals can still get out. The birds will walk down the board to the water and take baths, kind of fun to watch. Can be standing right by the tank in the heat of the summer and the Red Crossbills will just land beside me and take a drink. I love watching wildlife.
