Thanks delw,Its a cross between two types of foxes. Our hunting regs here in Alaska state that we have two...The Arctic fox including white and blue phases and secondly the red fox which includes cross, black and silver color phases.Daniel

A cross fox isn't a cross between 2 different types of foxs.......its just a color variation of the red fox. Red Fox come in 3 color variations...Red, Cross, and Silver. They say cross represents about 9% of the population and Silver 1 %......the reason there called cross fox is because they have dark blackish hair running down there back and shoulders.....if you were to skin the animal out and lay it flat it would look like a cross........thats what a cross fox is in the states.....I am not sure about the mating between artic and red in alaska though.....I am betting you shot a red fox, in cross fox color phase.

all,
I had a very interesting litter of fox pups reared in an old gravel pit right below my house this summer (in West Boise USA)
Momma was a cross fox, daddy silver (jet black), the litter was 3 silver, 2 cross and one traditional red. I have some photos from a distance if anyone would like to see.
They were out and about early morning and late evening every day. They also frequented my backyard all summer. I'd have loved to have one of those sliver buggers for a mount.

WD........sweet.Aint they purdy tho.Yeah them silvers are freaking gorgeous and come on man post them pictures.Kinda neat that they had they many different phases in a litter, cool!

I've only ever killed three fox, but one was a silver, when I was 17. I took it to a taxidermist to have it tanned. He REALLY wanted to do a mount with it and offered to mount it for free if I let him keep it in his shop for a couple of years. I never went back to pick it up. That was 15 years ago.
