Nope, I wasn’t even sure if it was flora or fauna at first glance! I asked Peggy for some info, that is what I’ve named AI. Peggy is a great character from the Madmen series.

To quote Peggy, “The Pacific velvet ant, scientifically known as Dasymutilla aureola, is a species of velvet ant found in the western United States. It is a type of wasp, but the wingless females are often mistaken for ants. They are known for their striking coloration, which can include red, orange, or yellow hairs, and a large, square-shaped head. These insects are solitary and prefer dry, sandy habitats.

Yep, 4th most painful sting in the insect world too apparently.

Can you imagine getting stung by this son of a B!?! Would you rather be trapped in a crappy forest service out house with a tarantula hawk or be face to face with a Griz at 50 yards in a dense aspen grove with it sitting on your elk kill?

I've never been stung by one but they are tough critters to kill relatively speaking from the insect world. I didn't know they were a wingless wasp though, thought the insect book had them classified as an ant... but it has been years since I've looked them up.

Yowza!
Can't imagine doing that. And it was a queen.
They and the Tarantula Hawks are fairly docile, luckily. Both are around the house at times. Everything leaves them alone.

The Fire ants here are the big nest builders and are very painful. You can see the circle nests by Sat. pics here.
Got hit by 4 in my leg working on my place, laying on the ground. Nest 20 ft. away. I gassed that nest as it would be a ongoing problem.
These are the nests the local Apache would stake a enemy on.

I’ve been tagged three times, in southern Illinois.

Picked one up as a kid because it looked cool. Education was swift and merciless. I can still remember watching that giant stinger hit my finger, and the instant shot of pain. Holy hell, did it hurt.

Stepped on two more while barefoot as a teenager. I was hobbled up for a few minutes. Maybe the better part of an hour. I highly suggest not going barefoot if you see them around.

I’ll believe the 4th most painful ranking. It’s worse than a hornet, Yellowjacket, bumble bee, or other wasp. The others just make up for it all with numbers- luckily the velvet ants are loners.
