Good choice , family first. Traveling with rifle just takes a littler longer at check in , need to declare it , sign slip and take it to TSA and tell them it is a unloaded firearm (at least in the airports I fly thru). TSA will look inside (most of the time) and then lock it and give you the keys back.

I have taken antlers back as luggage , I had to duck tape cardboard on the points (so they could not puncture another piece of luggage) and duck tape the skull. Sometimes I did not have to pay oversize fee but I would like to pay this for a large set of antlers. I have taken back moose and caribou on the plane as luggage with no problem. As said in a reply above ship your clothes back UPS and take the meat as luggage with the antlers. Use gel packs or dry ice but ice is not allowed (at least this was the rule the last time I took meat home on a plane).
