CO otc unit

If you had to pick a CO otc elk unite on public land that you would say. THAT'S the one place i would never want to pack a elk out of what one would it be. Thanks

I don’t know if there is any 1 otc unit that an answer can be given on. I’d say Go to caltopo and turn on the slope angle shading overlay and compare that with the roadless area map on onX and you could find multiple areas that you wouldn’t want to pack an animal out of. The slope angle layer on caltopo just gives you a quick idea of how rugged the terrain gets.

There’s a ton of places in various units I wouldn’t even try to pack an elk out of on foot, but the problem is someone with horses is already hunting those parts of those units.

Whatever unit Mt Zirkel Wilderness is in (GMU 6, maybe?). There was a pretty good post on here from last year about a guy that went in there sight-unseen.

Hard to pick a specific unit, but there are areas in probably every unit that I wouldn't want to pack an elk out of.

The problem with Mt. Z in 6 isn't oak brush, it's the deadfall from Pine beetle kill. Climbing over that all day eats you up. There are some nasty steep spots, but there are also a LOT of great horse trails. We found that even though you can hike 8 miles back, all you do is run into horses when you get there and almost as many hunters as there are at the road. Quite frustrating.

100% agree oak brush is not the only impediment that can create a good spot, deadfall, raging river with few good crossings, etc etc all work as well.

That said something to keep in mind about pine beetle ravaged forests...
